John Travolta Heartbroken Over Son’s Death

A day after the death of his son, Jett, John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston remain in shock, a friend of the family tells People.com.

"He never dreamed of this – their relationship was so close," says family attorney Mike Ossi, who’s in the Bahamas with the family. "He always said ‘I’m happy as long as my kids are happy.’ He is heartbroken … To bury your son is the worst thing you can ever do."

According to Ossi, 16-year-old Jett was discovered by a nanny on Friday morning around 10 a.m. After the nanny called 911, John Travolta tried in vain to resuscitate his son. "He didn’t want anything to happen to that boy, and he kept on trying to revive him," said Ossi. "He did mouth-to-mouth until they had to physically remove John to take Jett to the hospital."

Wow, it’s just heartbreaking to think about, and Travolta is one of those stars who’s just beloved by everyone. I know the world is mourning with him. I know I am.

Jennifer Aniston Prefers Dogs to Men

Jennifer Aniston says she prefers dogs to men, and really, who can blame her? She says a dog’s love is "conditional."

Sure, Aniston is currently dating rocker John Mayer, but it’s her two pooches, Norman and Dolly, who really hold the key to her heart.

"Men come and go, but there really is no relationship like the one you have with a dog, and then they don’t live as long as they should. You have to say goodbye way too soon. It’s just so sad. It makes me so sad. But their love is unconditional, and I love that."

See Aniston and Owen Wilson in "Marley & Me," currently in theaters. Talk about sad!

"Inglourious Basterds" Gets a Release Date

I always have trouble writing "Inglourious Basterds," because I just want to fix the typos. But I can’t, because that’s the official movie title. Anyway, the movie has a release date: Aug. 21, 2009.

Director Quentin Tarantino’s take on World War II stars Brad Pitt as a U.S. army lieutenant leading a group of soldiers operating behind Nazi lines. We’re certainly getting a lot of wars movies lately, aren’t we? "Valkyrie" "Defiance," and "Good," to name three.

Word has it that "Inglourious Basterds" takes a page from the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s and ’70s, in that it combines brutal violence and lyrical, fairytale-like qualities.

Any Tarantino fans out there? I can’t say I’ve ever been a huge fan of his work, but it’s certainly different and more violently stylish than many films. Tarantino won an Oscar for his 1994 "Pulp Fiction" script, and also made the martial arts films "Kill Bill: Vol. 1" (2003) and "Kill Bill: Vol. 2" (2004).

You kind of wonder what goes in on that head of his, something I often wonder about writer Stephen King. Who can handle all that violence and horror swirling around in their head all the time…?

Justin Theroux: Identity Crisis for "Iron Man 2"

Tony Stark suffering from identity issues? You know, I kind of wondered about that when his identity was revealed at the end of "Iron Man." Apparently, that will be a major plotpoint in "Iron Man 2."

While working on the script for the sequel, screenwriter Justin Theroux told MTV.com that the main theme of "Iron Man 2" will indeed be the issue of identity.

"It’s something that we’ve made a real decision to run towards rather than away from," said Theroux. I wonder what that means exactly…that maybe Tony isn’t sure about this whole Iron Man thing and wants out…?

"Iron Man 2" is scheduled for a May 7, 2010 release date, with Robert Downey Jr. once again playing the title role.

New in Theaters: Jan. 2, 2008

Being a holiday week, most movies opened on Wednesday, Dec. 31. But there really weren’t a lot of new movies this week, and the two that opened were in limited release. At any rate, there’s the rundown:

Good (limited, Dec. 31, 2008). Viggo Mortensen plays John Halder, a German literature professor in the 1930s whose book about compassionate euthanasia is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda. Viggo has certainly picked some interesting roles since his "Lord of the Rings" days. Also stars Jodie Whittaker (pictured, with Mortensen). [Trailer] [Official Site]

Defiance (limited, Dec. 31, 2008). Daniel Craig stars in this WWII movie about three brothers who take refuge in a dense woods to avoid the same fate as other Jews in Eastern Europe. [Trailer] [Official Site]

"Good" – Preview & Trailer

"Good" opened in limited release on Dec. 31, 2008. It stars Viggo Mortensen as John Halder, a German literature professor in the 1930s whose book about compassionate euthanasia is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda. In short, he wakes up one day to learn that he’s become a Nazi. Also stars Jodie Whittaker.

Viggo has certainly picked some interesting roles since his "Lord of the Rings" days, but he continues to deliver heartfelt performances. Emma Thompson’s Struggle with Depression

Sometimes you get the feeling that celebrities lead charmed lives where nothing ever goes wrong (well, ok, I get that feeling sometimes). But of course, they’re people just like the rest of us and struggle with similar problems. British actress Emma Thompson, currently on movie screens in "Last Chance Harvey," has battled depression for years, but says she’s found a way to deal with it.

The Oscar-winner first experienced the illness during a stint on the London stage in her 20s, and says it was one of the darkest times of her life.

"I’m prone to depression and to all sorts of mental illnesses," she said in a WENN news story. "I did a musical in the West End, and I became clinically depressed, even though I was being paid to be cheerful. I had no life at all. I lived like a nun. I didn’t drink. I didn’t have sex. I was 24, for crying out loud. No wonder I was depressed."

"The International" – Preview & Trailer

I’m always up for a good twisty-turny thriller, and it looks like "The International" will deliver. Clive Owen stars as Interpol Agent Louis Salinger, who along with Manhattan Assistant D.A. Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) is determined to bring one of the world’s most powerful banks to justice. The pair uncover the bank’s myriad illegal activities, tracking the money from Berlin to Milan to New York to Istanbul. But of course, their lives are in danger as the bank will stop at nothing – including murder – to continue financing war and terror.

I’m sure this will be one of those movies that leaves me wondering if this stuff happens in real life – and do I really want to know the answer? Directed by Tom Tykwer, the film hits theaters Feb. 13, 2009. It’s rated R for some sequences of violence and language. [Official Site]

"Taken" Preview & Trailer

"Taken" hits theaters Jan. 30, 2009, and the trailer looks pretty scary. It’s got screenwriter Luc Besson ("Transporter 3") and director Pierre Morel (cinematographer on "Unleashed" and "War") at the helm, so you’ve gotta believe it’ll hit the scary factor pretty well. It tells the story of a former government operative (Liam Neeson) who comes out of retirement and uses his extensive training to rescue his estranged daughter (Maggie Grace) from a slave trade operation. "Taken" is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, disturbing thematic material, sexual content, some drug references and language. [Official site]
