My Top Five Movies of 2007

December 31, 2007 by Jeanne

Here we are at the end of another year!  I thought I would pay tribute to my favorite movies of 2007!  Here we go!

#5 - "Knocked Up"

This movie isn’t Oscar-worthy but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t great!  Written and directed by Judd Apatow, this summer flick hit all the right notes - it’s funny, tender, dramatic, romantic and modern all at once!  Katherine Heigl (as Alison Scott) and Seth Rogen (as Ben Stone) had great on-screen chemistry as two people who, after a one night stand, learn they are about to become parents.  Their story unfolds realistically with both of them making many mistakes as they try to make their way through this unplanned pregnancy.  It’s really heartwarming and deserves a spot on my Top 5!  Here’s a look at how the movie performed:

  • Box Office Total: $148,734,225
  • Box Office Opening: $30,690,990
  • No. of Weeks in Top 10:
  • Highest Ranking:

Britney Spears To Star in Upcoming Movie?

December 31, 2007 by Jeanne

Is Britney Spears getting ready to act again?  This is one rumor that I’m hoping is not true - I’ve been reading reports everywhere about the possibility of Britney starring in an upcoming flick called "Memoirs of a Medicate Child."  First of all, that title is lame and secondly, I’m disappointed to report that I haven’t been able to find out much (or anything) about this movie.

Anyway, if you look at Britney’s neverending personal and professional troubles and her disappointing turn in 2002’s "Crossroads," then you might be inclined, as I am, to worry about any movie she’s in.  Too bad "A Series of Unfortunate Events" already came out - she’d be perfect.

Terminator Salvation Film Update

December 30, 2007 by Jeanne

The TerminatorPrincipal filming for Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins is expected to start on April 15, 2008 and be released in the summer of 2009.  Producer Moritz Borman talked to Empire magazine about the film which is to be directed by McG

Naturally, there was the usual banter about keeping the script "under very tight security" since they "have a huge twist at the end."  He also said that this is the "story everybody has been waiting for.  Namely, we’re in the future. The part of it where Arnold’s character has not yet been built but is on the drawing board."  Speaking of which, Borman also mentioned that Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger could make an appearance in the two subsequent movies.

"It’s convenient that he hasn’t been built at this point of the story, as Arnold has more important things to do right now, but that doesn’t mean he might not re-appear later in the trilogy," he said.
"He knows the material and is very supportive of what we’re doing. There might even be hints of his character in this one."

Borman refused to confirm that Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) is playing John Connor. "Everyone is assuming there is a John Connor and a Terminator in the script. Connor is in there along with another figure, but who is that figure?"

I’m not sure how I feel about there being TWO more movies.  To be honest, I wasn’t that thrilled with the third Terminator flick.  Plus, for me, these movies are not as interesting without Schwarzenegger.  I’m also concerned about Christian Bale overload.  One huge franchise (Batman) might be enough but two might be too much, know what I mean?

The Orphanage - Preview, Stills and Trailer

December 30, 2007 by Jeanne

"The Orphanage" will be released on January 11, 2008 and guess who won’t be there?  Me!  I love a good scary movie but this looks like something that would keep me up for days.  I know where to draw the line and it’s drawn - in permanent marker.

The plot follows Laura who returns to the house where she was raised, and decides to transform it into an orphanage. Soon, her son, Simón, makes an invisible friend…

Yeah, that’s where they lose me because the production stills are downright terrifying.  For those who can handle it, "The Orphanage" may be worth seeing since it’s won several awards already.

Film Preview: Definitely, Maybe

December 29, 2007 by Jeanne

"Definitely, Maybe" is scheduled to come out next Valentine’s Day (February 14, 2008) and it looks like I will "possibly, maybe" go to see it.  It’s got a solid cast (Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Derek Luke, Abigail Breslin, Elizabeth Banks and Rachel Weisz) and a really cute storyline.  Plus, Ryan Reynolds as a dad is totally adorable!  Here’s a plot summary from ComingSoon.net:

Ryan Reynolds stars as Will Hayes, a 30-something Manhattan dad in the midst of a divorce when his 10 year-old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know absolutely everything about how her parents met and fell in love.

Will’s story begins in 1992, as a young, starry-eyed aspiring politician who moves to New York from Wisconsin in order to work on the Clinton campaign. For Maya, Will relives his past as an idealistic young man learning the ins and outs of big city politics, and recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women.

Film Preview: The Water Horse

December 28, 2007 by Jeanne

"The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep" opened in theaters on December 25, 2007 and looks like a promising family film.  Even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie took their kids to see it.  For some reason, however, I was unable to drag my children (14, 10 and 4) to see it.  I’m happy that more family-oriented movies are being made but I wish they didn’t seem so recycled.  Aren’t there any original movies anymore?

The film is about a "lonely boy discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a sea creature of Scottish legend."  Does it remind you of anything?  What about "Mee-Shee: The Water Giant" which was released in 2005?  Or how about the 1995 flick, "Magic in the Water?"

Oh well, it’s Christmastime and if it is making families happy then it really doesn’t matter, right?  Besides the critics have been very kind to this film - Roger Ebert gave it 3.5/4 stars and Rotten Tomatoes gives it 79% (reviews from other sites were not readily available at the time this post was written).

Production Stills - The Incredible Hulk (2008)

December 28, 2007 by Jeanne

Edward Norton is set to star in next year’s "The Incredible Hulk" and I am scared.  Unlike my feelings about "Iron Man," I’m a bit upset about this comic-turned-movie.  Why?  Well, in that "Iron Man" post, I mentioned not being happy with 2003’s "Hulk" and I’m afraid they are going to ruin this story all over again.  According to IMDb, Marvel Comics decided to give the franchise a fresh start with a totally new creative team and cast, due to the disappointing performance of Hulk (2003).

Yes, Norton is probably a better actor than Eric Bana but can we really correct the harm that’s been done?  Actually… yes.  When you look at how wayward the "Batman" franchise had gone (George Clooney as "Batman" was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my life), it’s incredible how they managed to pull things together for "Batman Begins" (Christian Bale helped A LOT!).  I’m actually looking forward to the sequel, "The Dark Knight" so, hey!  I just made myself feel better about this new "Hulk" film!

Anyway, here are a couple production stills to accompany my ranting (click to enlarge):

Josh Duhamel and Fergie Get Engaged

December 27, 2007 by Jeanne

Josh Duhamel, who many might recognize from last summer’s blockbuster "Transformers," has proposed to his singer girlfriend, Fergie (a.k.a. Stacy Ferguson) and she accepted!  Fergie, 32, and Duhamel, 35, have been dating for three years.

It’s been an incredible year for these two, career-wise.  Fergie was a child star, battled a crystal meth addiction and was/is one of the "Black Eyed Peas" but this year, she has broken out and become a chart-topping solo artist.

At the same time, I can remember watching Josh on All My Children some time ago, then he graduated on to Las Vegas but his turn as a soldier in "Transformers" really put him on the map.

I wish them both nothing but happiness!
