Cloverfield Sequel in the Works

January 31, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Yep, “Cloverfield” has done so well at the box office — a whopping $46 million on opening weekend — Paramount now has a sequel in the works, says Variety.

“Cloverfield” producer J.J. Abrams, writer Drew Goddard and director Matt Reeves are in discussions to work on the upcoming fright-fest.

Reeves has also made a deal with GreeneStreet Films to direct “The Invisible Woman,” a Hitchcock-style thriller about a former beauty queen who turns to a crime to protect her family.

GreeneStreet recently completed two films: the John Polson-directed “Tenderness,” starring Russell Crowe, and “Bill,” directed by Melisa Wallack and Bernie Goldmann.

Casting News for "Me and Orson Welles"

January 31, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Claire Danes (pictured), Eddie Marsan, Leo Bill and Imogen Poots have joined the cast of Richard Linklater’s “Me and Orson Welles,” an adaptation of the period coming-of-age novel by Robert Kaplow, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The stellar cast joins Zac Efron and Ben Chaplin in the 1937-set movie, which centers on a high school student (Efron) who, while strolling the streets of New York, happens upon the yet-to-open Mercury Theatre and is noticed by its founder, Orson Welles.

He lands a bit part in “Julius Caesar,” the production that catapulted Welles to fame, and spends the next week learning about life and love.

Newcomer Christian McKay plays Welles, and Chaplin (“Water Horse: The Legend of the Deep”) has been cast as English film and stage actor George Coulouris.

The script was penned by Holly Gent Palmo, who worked on Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused,” and Vince Palmo, who is a long time collaborator with the director. The movie is scheduled for a 2009 release.

I’ve appreciated Linklater’s work as director of “School of Rock” and “Fast Food Nation.” And is Zac Efron headed for super-stardom or what?

I’ll definitely be checking out this movie.

Hannah Montana Movie Sets Presales Record

January 31, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know Hannah Montana is a hot ticket on the Disney Channel. But she rocks the house in theaters, too.

“Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert in 3-D” dominated online movie ticket sales on Wednesday, a day ahead of its debut.

Keep in mind that the movie — a filmed version of Miley Cyrus’ 2007 concert with dad Billy Ray Cyrus — is opening in fewer than 1,000 theaters AND the tickets are going for $15 — at least in my flyover town of Traverse City, Michigan.

Yeah, I’ll be there tomorrow with two tweens in tow, so you’ll hear all about the movie from me this weekend.

Fandango.com reports that “Hannah Montana” was the site’s best-selling concert film ever, selling out more than 1,000 showings and accounting for 91% of sales as of Wednesday morning.

I’m not usually a fan of 3-D, but I’m hoping it’s not too obnoxious and will make it seem like we’re AT the concert.

Sarah Michelle Gellar: Don’t Mess With Andy Garcia

January 31, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Note to Self: Cut a wide berth if you run into Andy Garcia on the street.

Sarah Michelle Gellar says she was shocked by how violent Garcia was while shooting scenes for their new movie, “The Air I Breathe.” So shocked, in fact, that she had to leave the set.

“I had a hard time separating the scene from what is reality,” said Gellar in an IMDB story. “At one point I had to leave. I didn’t know the scary side of Andy. I’m a small girl, and he doesn’t let go. When he throws me up against a wall - that’s actuality.”

The actress said she grew close to Garcia while making the movie, but found it hard to watch his method approach to playing a crime boss. Garcia also beat up Brendan Fraser’s gangster character in the movie.

Cast Saddles Up For "Broncos"

January 31, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Michael Angarano, Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement (pictured) have signed to star in “Gentlemen Broncos,” Jared Hess’ comedy being produced by Mike White and Ben LeClair, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The script, written by Hess and his wife, Jerusha Hess, follows a high school outcast (Angarano) who attends a camp for writers where his story gets ripped off by a legendary fantasy novelist named Ronald Chevalier (Clement).

Rockwell will play the fictional story’s title character who appears in book-come-to-life sequences under two guises: one in the teen’s story and one in the author’s story.

Production is set to start in March. White and LeClair, who worked with Jared Hess on “Nacho Libre,” are producing via their Ripcord banner.

So who are these people, and where have you seen them?

"Hancock" Teaser Trailer

January 31, 2008 by Jeanne

Hancock” has a teaser trailer and, just like I thought, it interests me more now that I can visualize what this movie is about.  The film, starring Will Smith, is revolves around a tortured superhero who crash-lands in Brooklyn “and tries to transform himself by romancing an alluring housewife, causing chaos in the city.”  I have to add that I am so happy to see Jason Bateman making such a good comeback (I really liked him in “Juno”).

The film also stars Charlize Theron and Johnny Galecki.  It’s set to hit theaters on July 2, 2008.

DVD Review: The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

January 31, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

DVD: “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters”
Released: January 29, 2008
Runtime: 90 minutes
Rated: PG-13 for a brief sexual reference
Buy it: Amazon.com

You wouldn’t think a documentary about video gamers would be all that exciting, but “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters,” directed by Seth Gordon, rocks it out of the arcade. My 12-year-old son and I saw this movie at the Traverse City Film Festival last year, and we both loved it! One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen, and especially fun to see it with a film festival audience.

Billy Mitchell (pictured) is a 30-something guy who still blow-dries his shoulder-length hair every day, if that tells you anything. He set the Donkey Kong world record in the 80’s, and no one has ever come close to beating it until Steve Weibe came along a few years ago.

Steve is a family guy from Seattle, who set up a Donkey Kong game in his garage. He decided he could beat Billy’s record, so he spent nights in his garage practicing and figuring out strategies.

Then Steve goes to FunSpot - the big place for vintage arcade games like Frogger, Donkey Kong, etc, and proceeds to beat Billy’s record. Only Billy - who now runs a hot-sauce business in Florida - hears about it through his inside people and sends in a video tape of him beating Steve’s score.

Film Preview: "Over Her Dead Body"

January 31, 2008 by Jeanne

Over Her Dead Body” premieres this Friday (February 1, 2008) and while it looks a little bit funny, I am just not sold on it.  I mean, this is the tagline: “Just because she’s passed on… Doesn’t mean she’s moving on.”  Ouch!  The movie is about a woman who is crushed by an ice sculpture of an angel on her wedding day.  Over a year later, her fiancé is still trying to move on and seeks the help of a psychic.  Based on some lies, he and the psychic begin to have a romantic relationship and his dead fiancé tries, in vain, to prevent them from getting together.  Yeah…  The cast is led by Eva Longoria Parker, Paul Rudd, Lake Bell, Jason Biggs and Lindsay Sloane.

Eva Longoria Parker was on Live with Regis and Kelly to promote the movie just this morning.  Click here to watch her interview.

DVD Review: Daddy Day Camp

January 30, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Movie: Daddy Day Camp
On DVD: January 29, 2008
Rated: PG for mild bodily humor and language
Suggested Ages: 7+
Buy it: Amazon.com
Gecko Rating:

In 2003’s “Daddy Day Care,” Charlie Hinton and Phil Ryerson (played by Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin at the time) created a successful daycare business and kept everyone laughing at the same time.

This sequel finds the pair (now played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Paul Rae) still in the business after four years. But their kids are growing up and the dads feel like the years are slipping away. To spend more time with them, they decide to take over a summer day camp.

“The Daddy Day Care brand means a lot,” says Charlie to wife Kim (Tamala Jones). “Repurposing that brand into summer is just smart business.” Kim’s not convinced. After all, Charlie has zero knowledge of the great outdoors. Still, he’s excited about the idea of introducing his son, Ben (Spencir Bridges), to Camp Driftwood – the same camp he went to as a kid.

Film Preview: "Strange Wilderness"

January 30, 2008 by Jeanne

Strange Wilderness” is being brought to us by Happy Madison productions and, while it doesn’t look like the worst movie in the world, I kind of feel sorry for Steve Zahn.  I’d like to see him get a role that is different from everything he’s been doing.

IMDb’s plot summary describes the movie as follows: “With the ratings dropping for a wilderness-themed TV show, two animal fans go to the Andes in search of Bigfoot.”

Well, I can’t lie - I like cheesy movies when I’m in the mood for them so this could be decent.  I also like Justin Long and Jonah Hill so it’s worth giving a chance.

“Strange Wilderness” opens in theaters on February 1, 2008.
