February 29, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Jon Favreau, director of the upcoming “Iron Man” movie answered questions at the WonderCon Conference in San Francisco last Saturday. Here’s the rundown:1. On Ozzy’s song “Iron Man”: Jon received Sharon Osbourne’s blessing to use the song.

2. On casting Robert Downey, Jr.: It was a struggle, but the initial fan reaction got Paramount and Marvel on board.

3. Jet Boots: Favreau offered an exclusive clip that showed Tony Stark testing out the jet boots in his garage. At first he goes crashing into the wall and then gets it right, claiming; “Yeah, I can fly.”

4. Next Steps. Favreau is heading up to Skywalker Ranch for the next couple of weeks for more post-production work.

5. Next Steps II: He hopes to make Avengers, and might get the chance if “Iron Man” does well.

6. On rumors of a Hulk/Iron Man crossover: “It’s true there are rumors on the Internet. I don’t want to give secrets away, many rumors are true and many rumors are not. People are figuring out the whole movie and I want to keep mystery.”

Freddie Highmore to Voice "Astro Boy"

February 29, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Are there no other young male actors in Hollywood? Because it seems like Freddie Highmore gets picked for everything. Not that that’s a bad thing. He’s a great actor. Just, you know, spread the love around a little.

Now he’s set to voice the role of Astro Boy, a CG-animated movie directed by David Bowers, scheduled for a 2009 release. It’s based on a Japanese animated series about a scientist who creates a robotic replication of his deceased son. Of course, there are villains, and Astro has to figure out how to adapt to human life.

“It’s terrific that Freddie has agreed to play Astro,” says Bowers. “He’s a remarkably skilled young actor, whose freshness and vitality make him perfect for the role. Astro Boy is a beloved superhero and has captured hearts around the globe for more than 50 years. I can’t wait to see where Freddie takes him.”

Me either!

Top 50 Family Movies of All Time

February 28, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

Need a good flick for family movie night at your house? Here are my picks for the Top 50 Family Movies of All Time. Any I missed? Any that shouldn’t be here? Comments welcome!

1. RATATOUILLE (G; ok for kids 5+). Remy (Patton Oswalt) is a rat who dreams of becoming a great chef, despite his family’s skepticism and the obvious problem of being a rat in a rodent-phobic profession. But fate smiles on the little guy when he finds himself not only in Paris, but living beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau (Brad Garrett). Remy forms an unlikely partnership with Linguini (Lou Romano), a garbage boy who inadvertently discovers the rat’s amazing cooking talents.

2. HAIRSPRAY (PG for language, some suggestive content, and momentary teen smoking; ok for kids 8+). It’s the 1960s and the nation is hooked on TV dance shows. In Baltimore, chubby high schooler Tracy Turnblad (Nicole Blonsky) and best friend Penny Pingleton (Amanda Bynes) audition for part on the popular teen show, “The Corny Collins Show,” even if it means defying her parents Edna (John Travolta in drag!) and Wilbur (Christopher Walken). A fun throw-back to good, old-fashioned musical comedies.

New Photos: "The Incredible Hulk"

February 28, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

With a new trailer in the works and the movie less than four months away, Universal has released two new shots from “The Incredible Hulk,” both of which appear in the new issue of Empire magazine, on sale from Friday.

Director Louis Leterrier also offered a few sneak peeks, in an interview with Empire.

“We didn’t want to make a cerebral movie,” he says of comparisons to Ang Lee’s earlier film. “We wanted full action, Hulk smashing stuff up. But Ed Norton’s script has given Bruce’s story real gravitas. Marvel has always made their superhero movies with great actors to make it tangible, and Ed has nailed it here.”

Leterrier adds that just because it’s a superhero movie doesn’t mean it’s just for 13-year-old boys. “Ed and I both see superheroes as the new Greek gods, so there’s a classical undercurrent to Bruce’s psycho-drama. It’s Prometheus, Pandora’s Box, and Hercules, but with explosions.”

X-Files 2 Movie Details From WonderCon

February 28, 2008 by Jeanne

“The X Files 2″ was included in WonderCon this past weekend and David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Frank Spotnitz and creator, Chris Carter were on hand to answer questions (not that they gave many since this plot is a pretty well-guarded secret).

Anthony Baratta gave a pretty detailed account of what they all had to say which can be viewed by clicking here.  As a quick overview, he talked about the teaser trailer that was shown which included scenes of FBI/Police with dogs and long sticks searching a large “snow covered meadow” with one character (played by Billy Connolly) saying, “It’s here” over and over again.  There were some quick cuts to other stuff but it just kept coming back to that snow covered meadow where they find a girl frozen in what looks like a block of ice under the snow.  Hmm….

Also worth noting was the mention that no characters ever truly die on “The X-Files.”  What does that mean?  Will we be seeing Smoking Man and Krycek?  Wow!  I would love that, actually.  I wish they had said “on The X-Files, no characters are every truly adopted.”  Bring on baby William!!!

Here are some pictures from the press conference:
