Spring Breakdown Review and Trailer
May 28, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Movie: Spring Breakdown * Official Site | On DVD: June 2, 2009 |
Runtime: 84 minutes | Directed by: Ryan Shiraki |
MPAA Rating: Rated R for crude humor and sexual references | Gecko Rating: |
Got 84 minutes. Need a laugh? Don’t care if the movie is riddled with sex and crude humor? Then you need to watch “Spring Breakdown,” my friends.
There’s nothing new here. It’s the familiar story of nerdy kids wanting to be cool. But when you’ve got Amy Poehler, Parker Posey, Rachel Dratch, Amber Tamblyn, Jane Lynch and Seth Myers in the cast, you know you’re in for a few good chortles.
Poehler, Parker and Dratch are in their 30s now, and lamenting the coolness they missed out on in high school and college. So they head to South Padre for Spring Break. Parker’s main task is to keep her politician boss’s geeky daughter (Tamblyn) from pulling any shenanigans. Meanwhile, it’s beers, bikinis and upside-down shots.
Vanessa Hudgens and Alyson Michalka Star in Bandslam
May 27, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Zac Efron may be moving beyond Disney-type movies, but it seems like his girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens is sticking with the tried-and-true formula.
Hudgens ("High School Musical") and Alyson Michalka ("Phil of the Future," "Aly and AJ") are starring in "Bandslam," due in theaters Aug. 14, 2009. Michalka plays a gifted singer-songwriter who recruits a new kid in town (Gaelan Connell, "Chocolat") to manage her rock band. Her main motivation? Go up against her egotistical ex-boyfriend (Scott Porter, "Friday Night Lights") and his band at a battle of the bands competition. Meanwhile, Sam (Hudgens) and Will find romance.
My first instinct is this sounds a lot like "High School Musical" kicked up to a PG rating (for some thematic elements and mild language). But it’s produced by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and distributed by Summit Entertainment ("Twilight"), so it might surprise me. It will definitely appeal to fans of Hudgens and Michalka. Are you looking forward to this movie?
After the jump, more pics and a trailer…
Seann William Scott and Adam Brody: A Couple of Dicks
May 27, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan are "A Couple of Dicks." Or at least, they play dicks in the movies. Then again, they may be dicks in real life, too, though I prefer to think of them as nice guys.
Seann William Scott (pictured) and Adam Brody are joining them in "A Couple of Dicks" (I just like writing that), a buddy action flick directed by Kevin Smith.
Willis plays a maverick cop (he’s never played THAT role before!), who along with his partner (Morgan) track a valuable stolen baseball card, scuffle with a gangster who’s obsessed with memorabilia, and rescue a beautiful Mexican woman who holds the secret to millions in laundered money.
Not sure if this is fun or just icky: Scott plays a thief known as the Shit Bandit (because of the "souvenirs" he leaves at his robberies – I’ll go with icky). Brody is a detective who’s not thrilled to be working with Willis and Morgan.
Hmmm, definitely sounds like a movie for teenage guys or adults guys who think they’re still teenagers. But I’m a Bruce Willis fan, so of course, I’ll have to check it out. It’s set for release on Feb. 26, 2010.

New Stills from The Twilight Saga: New Moon
May 27, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Three new stills from "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" are online, and I’ve got them below! The movie hits theaters on Nov. 20, 2009, and continues the story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Yes, it’s a love triangle, only with humans, vampires and werewolves. Check out the poster of the werewolf pack here.

Alison Lohman in Drag Me to Hell – Are loan officers considered the grim reaper?
May 27, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Just the name “Drag Me to Hell? sounds like a cheesy 1950s movie, but the trailer and previews look downright creepy. It’s directed by Sam Raimi and stars Alison Lohman as a loan officer who, well, gets dragged to hell after nixing a loan and evicting an old woman from her home.
Hmmm, a sign of the times? I dunno, are loan officers seen as the grim reaper these days? The movie’s rated PG-13 for sequences of horror violence, terror, disturbing images and language, and opens in theaters May 29, 2009.
New Pics of Angelina Jolie on the set of Salt
May 27, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
I’ve got some new pics of Angelina Jolie on the set of her upcoming movie “Salt.? She plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who (maybe) doubles as a Russian sleeper spy and has people after her believing she’s out to assassinate the President.
The film also stars Liev Schreiber as Winter, Evelyn’s ally in the Russian office of the CIA, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peabody, a counterintelligence agent who wants to bring her down.
It’s directed by Phillip Noyce, who knows what he’s doing with this genre. His other movies include “Clear and Present Danger,? “The Saint,? and “Patriot Games.? “Salt? is scheduled for a July 23, 2010 release.
Al Pacino as Jack Kevorkian: Should a person be allowed to die?
May 27, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
You know, Al Pacino sort of looks like Jack Kevorkian. That, coupled with the fact that he can play pretty much any role he wants and do a fine job with it, makes him a good choice for ‘You Don’t Know Jack," an HBO Films biopic about Dr. Jack Kevorkian that Barry Levinson will direct.
Jack “Dr. Death? Kevorkian grew to fame by assisting in more than 150 suicides. Not only that, he bucked the court system several times, but was finally convicted after sending a tape of himself assisting in a suicide to “60 Minutes.? Convicted of second-degree murder in 1999, he’s serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison in Michigan.
I’m sure the movie will spark a lot of debate on assisted suicide. Should a person be allowed to die? I used to think not, but after seeing friends and family suffer horrible, terminal diseases, I’m starting to change my tune on that. I think I’d like to have that option in that situation. What about you?

A Buffy movie without Joss Whedon? Discuss!
May 26, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
What’s this? A new "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie coming to the big screen? Is this a good thing? Read on…
The franchise started in 1992 with a feature film starring Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens (PeeWee!), Rutger Hauer, Hilary Swank, and Luke Perry.
Joss Whedon wrote the movie, then went on to make the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" TV series, which aired from 1997 to 2003. Most people don’t think of the movie when someone mentions Buffy. They think of the TV series.
Now there’s talk of ANOTHER movie coming to the big screen, but Whedon isn’t involved (at least, at this point). Vertigo Entertainment is working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what they’re calling a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.
We think of Whedon as the person most aligned with Buffy, but Kuzui Enterprises has actually held onto the rights since the beginning (which shows how important it is to hang onto rights!). She discovered the script from then-unknown Whedon.
I just finished watching several Whedon shows on DVD, including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly." It’s hard to imagine a new movie without the input of Whedon, because he’s so interwoven into all of his shows. I’m not ruling out a successful venture, just saying I need time to wrap my head around the idea.

May 26, 2009 by Jane Boursaw
Tops at the box office this weekend was "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian." - Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, $70M
- Terminator Salvation, $53.82M

- Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, $4.83M
- Obsessed, $2.50M
