ABBA The Movie?

by Administrator on September 29th, 2005

Oh those Swedes sure do love their national symbols. Thanks to a grant from the Swedish parliament, restoration by the Swedish Film Institute and distribution by Universal Music, North Americans can own their very own DVD copy of this cinematic masterpiece ( I had difficultly typing that, even in pure sarcasm).

And what does the ABBA movie, The Cider House Rules, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape have in common? As much as we would like to believe that there is no link, it is an interesting fact that all three were directed by Swede Lasse Hallstrom, who was the man responsible for the vast majority of ABBA videos as well.

The movie is said to showcase the wild popularity of the band, combining rare concert footage from an Australian tour in 1977, and the story of a fictional DJ who is trying to get an interview with them ( I smell Almost Famous parallels). The movie will be released as a single-disc DVD and a limited edition two-DVD digipak. The two disc version features a 40-minute interview with the director, Hallstrom as well as ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, and a collection of the theatrical trailer and television commercials.

Coming this October, to a retro movie night near you.
