Bond….James Bond.
After months of rumour, wide-eyed speculation, and wishful thinking, the announcement of the latest in a fine string of actors to take the name of Britain’s foremost espionage artist … is still under wraps.
The strongest contender, and the man that tabloids have already declared as having secured the role, is Daniel Craig. He has apparently beaten out new-comer Henry Cavill, though no official announcement from the casting crew of Casino Royale has been made.
There seems to be a funny dichotomy in the comments I’ve been reading, with the Brits declaring near mortal shame at the choice of Craig, and the Americans seeming to think he’ll make an excellent 007. I’m inclined to go with the Brits on this one, he just doesn’t look like Bond material to me and unless the studio is able to pull off some kind of stylistic miracle, I fear the latest in the Bond franchise may be the one of the last I ever bother with. I’ve always taken them with a grain of salt, seeing as they have next to no decent plots and swirl aimlessly around sex and gadgets, but with the loss of a convincing face as the head man, yeesh, I don’t know.
Also, a big deal was made of the fact that the new movie would be about a younger Bond (hence the pre-Q and pre-gadget days), but at nearly 40 years of age, Craig is a far cry in looks from a 28 year old spy phenom. Craig has had some gravy roles in films like Elizabeth, Road to Perdition and Layer Cake and having seen several movies with his name in the credits I can honestly say that I like Daniel Craig as an actor. But make no mistake; even with a vat of hair dye, a swanky tux, an a stellar voice coach, I’m skeptical. This new movie isn’t even going to have Q, or rocket-launching cars, meaning that Craig will really have to step it up a notch to carry the movie entirely upon his shoulders.
