Box-Office Breakdown: Dec. 16-18
King Kong landed with a giant gorilla sized thump in theatres over the weekend, but didn’t topple any free standing structures. The $200+ million dollar remake of the 1933 Hollywood classic did very well, but was not the brilliant success that Peter Jackson and Universal had hoped. I personally have heard wildly varying reviews from “wretched” to “wonderful”. Regardless, the monkey movie gathered up $50.1 million this weekend, though this is still below Universal expectations of $75 million, and some rather optimistic $100 million estimates.
The rest of the Top 10 (in millions):
1. King Kong - $50.1
2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe -$31.8
3. The Family Stone - $12.5
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - $6.0
5. Syriana - $5.6
6. Walk the Line - $3.7
7. Yours, Mine and Ours - $3.5
8. Brokeback Mountain Focus $2,5
9. Just Friends - $2.1
10. Aeon Flux - $1.8
