Box-Office Breakdown: Dec. 2-4
Week three of Potter dominion at the box-office this weekend as the boy wizard managed to hang on to the top slot despite a whopping 64% decrease in revenue from last week. It just goes to show you exactly how much money this movie had racked up during the past couple of weeks that after less than half the previous revenues, it still cleared the #2 movie by a cool $7 million. I didn’t expect Goblet of Fire to drop from the top spot due to a rather lacklustre set of challengers, but the fight for next week’s box-office champ title should be a close one, with the Potter craze waning and goliath The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, opening up December 9th.
Stumbling into the second spot was Charlize Theron as Aeon Flux, a vinyl clad assassin with far less cool hair than the cartoon original. Managing what I would consider a disappointing $12.7 million, I expected to see it clear the $15 million mark if it had a good showing, but apparently underestimated the pull of Potter. Perhaps I’m also giving too much credit to Daniel Radcliffe and friends though, and it’s equally likely that Aeon flopped simply because it was trash. I haven’t seen it myself, so I’ll reserve judgement for a later date.
Rent continued it’s poor showing by getting evicted from the fifth spot in favour of Just Friends, where Ryan Reynolds goeshis high school reunion and comes face to face with the woman whose rejection started him on his playboy ways.
The top 10 this past weekend:
1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - $19.9 million
