Box-Office Breakdown: Dec. 23-25

by Administrator on December 26th, 2005

Kong is still King of the box-office this week, but not by a comfortable margin. Narnia, though declining, is not dropping off as sharply in revenue and viewership as its gorilla competitor. In its third week of release, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe finished with a respectable $20.4 million dollars, close on the heels of Peter Jackson’s ape, who beat his chest to the tune of $21.3 million in its second week.

A flurry of debuts this weekend made their mark in the charts, snapping up slots in the top ten faster than I could down my Christmas eggnog. Fun With Dick and Jane topped the newcomers at a very respectable $14.5 million, followed by Cheaper By The Dozen 2 at $9.3 million.

Steven Spielberg’s politically charged Munich made expected waves, opening to a nice $4.1 million at only 532 theatres. Expansionist Memoirs of a Geisha also saw a good tally from its wider release, hitting the $6.8 million mark at just over 1,500 screens.

Here’s how the Top 10 played out:

1. “King Kong,” $21.3 million.
2. “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” $20.4 million.
3. “Fun With Dick and Jane,” $14.5 million.
4. “Cheaper by the Dozen 2,” $9.4 million.

5. “Memoirs of a Geisha,” $6.8 million.
6. “The Family Stone,” $6.7 million.
7. “The Ringer,” $5.3 million.
8. “Munich” $4.1 million.

9. “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” $3.9 million.
10. “Rumor Has It,” $3.5 million.
