Box-Office Breakdown: Dec. 9-11
By Erin Harvey | Related entries in Box-office, Independent, Drama, Family Fun, FantasyA little slow this week getting the weekend numbers out to you, no excuses, I’m just moving at turtle speed right now it seems. Too few hours in the day for what needs to get done.
But seriously, do you really need for me to tell you how the weekend turned out? The past month has been a series of “big blockbuster, little else” weekends that leave nothing to the imagination. Where’s the challenge? Where’s the curiosity, come Monday, to know who came out on top? It’s just not there. I shouldn’t bother with this at all, but in the interest of keeping the Box-Office Breakdown going, here’s what happened at cinemas over the weekend.
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe breezed easily to the top spot, quintupling the closest follower and surprising absolutely no one. The Disney production raked in $65.6 million, which though it was no Goblet of Fire, is a pretty darn decent debut given the way opening numbers have been lately. Industry estimates had placed the fantasy adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ children’s books at around $50 million for an opener, so Disney must be rather pleased by the surplus.
Riding Aslan’s coat-tails was Syriana, which saw a full release this weekend and didn’t disappoint, pulling in a decent $11.7 million. Not much in comparison to Narnia, but that tally places the Middle-Eastern oil extravaganza about par with the openings of top-grossing movies this fall.
In other news, Aeon Flux is still floundering, and Brokeback Mountain raced out of the gate to a $109,000/cinema take for its five theatre limited release. Look for one of this year’s most potent films to buck its way to some big numbers as it expands its showing schedule.
