Coen Brothers Take Directors Guild Prize
Filmmakers Joel Coen and Ethan Coen nabbed a Best Director prize for “No Country For Old Men” from the Directors Guild of America on Saturday.
This is good news, because the winner often goes on to win the same honor at the Academy Awards, scheduled for next month.
After the win, Joel Coen told reporters, “Oh, we get two of them (award statues). Ethan and I have a bookshelf in our office where we keep various plaques and such that we’ve gotten over the years that we call our ego corner.”
Not only that, when brother Ethan is feeling low, he uses silver polish and “spit shines his medals for an hour or two,” noted Joel. “It makes him feel better. This is a really big one, in every respect. It’s going to keep him busy.”
The Coen brothers might well clear some room on that shelf, as “Country” is nominated for a slew of Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem.
While the fate of the Academy Awards is still in limbo because of the ongoing writer’s strike, organizers are still busy making plans for the ceremony, set to take place on Sunday, February 24 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
With the Grammys getting a waiver and allowing striking writers to work on the show, could the Oscars be next?
