Coogan and Shue Spill on "Hamlet 2"

by Jane Boursaw on August 24th, 2008

“I’ve built my career on being an asshole,” says Steve Coogan. “And if you’re happy being an asshole, it’s freeing. You end up quite cool.”

Adds Elisabeth Shue, “The end run to coolness.”

I’ve often thought the same thing, since I fail miserably at being one. But sometimes, you just have to be one, to get by in life. Sad, but true!

Anyway, Coogan and Shue sat down with Backstage.com and talked about their movie, Hamlet 2, which opened in limited release Aug. 22, 2008. I still can’t decide whether I liked the movie or not, although any movie with the song, “Rock Me, Sexy Jesus” can’t be all bad.

More after the jump…

In the movie, Coogan plays failed-actor-turned-high school drama teacher who transforms his “high risk” students into the hot musical-theatre cast of a singing, dancing, politically incorrect sequel to Shakespeare’s tale. Shue plays herself, but she’s thrown in the towel on acting and become a nurse.

It’s not that far-fetched an idea for the actress. “There have been many times in my career when I’ve thought of quitting. Four years ago, I sent away for an application from Columbia University. I was thinking of getting an M.A. in creative writing and then teaching it. But I was saved. I took over for Catherine Keener in Burn This.”

Adds Coogan, “You’re fashionable and then you’re unfashionable. And when you’re unfashionable, you’re petrified and hope things change. But you keep working and move forward.” So true.
