Death Cab for Cutie signs for New Moon soundtrack

September 17, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

As we get closer to the Nov. 20 release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” we’re getting more details about, well, the details of the movie. Bits and pieces about the soundtrack are coming out this week.

At the VMAs on Sunday, Death Cab for Cutie unveiled their contribution, "Meet Me on the Equinox." The full soundtrack will be announced tomorrow, but we’ve got a few details on the album, due out Oct. 20, 2009.

Music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas told the New York Times she’s confident that the “New Moon” soundtrack would include already rumored tracks from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, indie folker Bon Iver, and British alt-rockers Band of Skulls. Though there have been rumors of songs by the Killers and Grizzly Bear, Patsavas wouldn’t confirm it.

She also said that “New Moon” will blend music and filmmaking a little better than “Twilight.” “This is a much more somber movie than ‘Twilight,’” she said. “There is a lot of love lost, so the artists that are going to make up the soundtrack reflect that longing — a lot of acoustic instruments, a lot of a cappella singing."

MTV News also confirmed on Sunday that Muse were finalists for the "New Moon" soundtrack. Their tune “Supermassive Black Hole” was on the “Twilight” album, so this would be their second association with the franchise.

Any thoughts on this news? Happy, sad, indifferent? I was really hoping for either “Breathe” by Taylor Swift and/or Hannah Pestle’s “Need.”
