Ryan Reynolds plays Will Hayes, a 30-something Manhattan dad who’s in the midst of a divorce. When his 10-year-old daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin), starts asking him about his life before marriage, Will creates a bedtime story about how her parents met and fell in love.
More after the jump…
It begins in 1992. Will was a young, aspiring politician who moves from Wisconsin to New York to work on the Clinton campaign. There are three women in the story, and he changes their names, so that Maya won’t know who turns out to be her mom until the end of the story. There’s:
Emily (Elizabeth Banks), Will’s college sweetheart, and a dependable, girl-next-door type;
April (Isla Fisher), his longtime best friend and confidante; and
Summer (Rachel Weisz), the free-spirited, ambitious journalist.
As Maya puts together the pieces of her dad’s romantic puzzle (which he comically attempts to tell in PG terms), she begins to understand that love is not so simple or easy. She also helps him understand that it’s never too late to go back…and maybe even find a happy ending.
What stands out about this movie is the sweet, open way Will tells his daughter about his past. Ryan Reynolds and Abigail Breslin are great together She’s her usual cute self, and he can make you laugh and also break your heart in the same moment.
Plus, I really had no idea who her mom would end up being, which adds to the story and keeps you guessing all the way through. Each of the three women have their own way of keeping you glued to the screen.
For a sweet romantic comedy with an interesting angle, I highly recommend this movie. And that’s a “definitely,” not a “definitely maybe.”
Bonus Features: Creating a Romance: Brought to You by Volkswagen; The Changing Times of Definitely, Maybe; Feature Commentary with Director Adam Brooks and Star Ryan Reynolds; Deleted Scenes.

This movie never appealed to me much, but I LOVE Abigail Breslin and this review is giving me second thoughts. I might have to check it out after all. Thanks!
