THE DVD: “Smart People” stars Dennis Quaid as Lawrence Wetherhold, a recently widowed literature professor who’s wandering numbly through life until an accident lands him in the hospital. He reconnects with a former student (Sarah Jessica Parker) and his dysfunctional family: Ellen Page and Ashton Holmes as his kids, and Thomas Haden Church as his slacker brother.

I wanted to see this film, but never got a chance to. This is another one of those films that totally went under the radar, especially being an almost independent movie. I love the amazing ensemble cast, especially Ellen Page, she’s the actress to keep an eye on, and she’s basically on her way to becoming another Meryl Streep.

I saw this movie today, the day after it opened here. And I was simply delighted. This is a fine story told with non-stop heart-tugging humor and verve. The movie captured my attention immediately, and held it from beginning to end.
