Frank Miller Eyes "Buck Rogers" for 2011
Buck Rogers certainly has a long history, dating back to the 1939 movie starring Buster Crabbe. The story follows a pilot and his young passenger, who crash-land on a mountaintop and are put into suspended animation by a strange gas. They awaken 500 years later to discover that the Earth is now ruled by a tyrant called Killer Kane, and they lead a fight to overthrow him.
There were other incarnations of “Buck Rogers,” all of which I believe originated from a 1920s cartoon strip that morphed into a 1934 short starring John Dille, Jr. as Buck. There was a TV series in the 1950s, but the one I remember is the 1979 TV series starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray.
Now Frank Miller and Odd Lot Entertainment, the creator and production company behind the upcoming comic-book movie “The Spirit,” are close to teaming again on a new version of “Buck Rogers,” scheduled for a 2011 release date.
More after the jump…
And this is interesting: Frank Miller is a friend of John Flint Dille, who operates the Dille Trust. I believe Dille is the grandson of the aforementioned John Dille, Jr. from the 1934 short. As I understand it, the trust sold the “Buck Rogers” rights to Nu Age/Millennium this year. Miller will write and direct the film, expected to be darker and filled with the crime and corruption he loves so well, like in “Sin City” and “The Spirit.”
A new version of “Buck Rogers” should be interesting and definitely not cheesy, with Miller in charge.
