From a Classic to a Classic?
Still on the British front, it appears that the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice has been largely embraced by UK movie-goers, who have made the it the #1 movie in the country. The fear with classical adaptations is that those with strong emotional ties to the book, as well as both literary and film critics, will be watching you like a hawk to ensure that you don’t take too many creative liberties with their beloved literature. Pride and Prejudice seems to take rather well to screens of all sizes however, with the television version produced by the BBC widely-regarded as having been a monumental success.
There had been some rumblings about the casting of Keira Knightley as Elizabeth, though she seems to have silenced her critics, as I have not heard many negative comments on that front. Poor Matthew MacFayden had the looming spectre of Colin Firth’s critically acclaimed performance as Darcy in the BBC version, but judging from the success at the theatres, he’s held his own.
It’ll be interesting to see if fellow classical re-working Oliver Twist, in theatres as of last weekend, can also manage to impress.

God knows I love Pride and Prejudice, and I’m game for a lot of variations in both movie and book form. But Keira ? *twitches*
I’ve liked all Working Title movies I’ve seen so far. But I have to say that the movie pictures on their website look all wrong.

I’d love to hear what you thought on this one, I’m eager to get ahold of it for that very reason. They’re reprising some rather heavy duty roles and I’m not sure they can pull it off.
