Brokeback Mountain, apple of the critics’ fickle eye for the moment, continues its stampede through Hollywood with a solid seven nominations for this year’s upcoming Golden Globes awards. The film is up for hardware in the acting (Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams), directing (Ang Lee), writing (best screenplay), music (best core and best original song), and Best Picture categories.
Other nominees for the Best Picture (Drama) category are: The Constant Gardener, Good Night and Good Luck, A History of Violence, and Match Point. Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) candidates include the likes of Walk The Line, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Pride & Prejudice, The Producers, and The Squid and the Whale. I don’t know what kind of criteria the Globes use to make their selections, but is it really fair to call Walk The Line a musical? Joaquin Phoenix is no Julie Andrews (and I’m not saying that’s a bad thing).
The complete list of nominees can be found at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s website.
