Goodfellas The Best Ever

Total Film has a lot of guts, I’ll give them that much. It’s not an enviable job to put together a list of the Top 100 movies of all time. The public is bound to disagree with you, in some cases loathing your opinions, and the selection process is more than likely going to result in some fiery debate amongst the editors.

Still, they put their heads together and did their best to produce a list that reflected their opinions. The list is available soon at WHSmith bookstores in Britain (I’ve not come across a North American carrier) for £9.99. I certainly hope that there is some seriously revealing commentary in that little book for that price. I want discussions about each and every decision and would like to know how on earth recent release Sideways rumbles in at #69, while Casablanca barely makes the cut at #98.

The list is extraordinarily modern-oriented and almost entirely misses comedies, non-North American films and documentaries. I really don’t see how Goodfellas is the best of all time. Is it good? Silly question, of course it’s good. But is it the best? I really don’t think so. That said, I don’t fault the editors at all. Movie tastes are ultimately subjective, and trying to pull together a list of this magnitude that will please everyone is impossible. I was interested in what they choose, but would like to hear the reasoning behind it.
