"Gran Torino" - Dirty Harry Spoiler Alert!

May 7, 2008 by Jane Boursaw

First, Indiana Jones. Now it looks like Dirty Harry may be returning to the big screen.

In March, Ain’t It Cool News reported a rumor that Gran Torino, Eastwood’s latest production for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow, was indeed the sixth installment in the Dirty Harry series.

<SPOILER ALERT>

More after the jump…

Now Britain’s The Sun newspaper is reporting that Eastwood, 77, wants his Dirty Harry character - immortalized in five movies - to go out in style. Do I need to spell it out? That means no seventh movie.

The ruthless cop, who made the words “make my day” into a household phrase, was first seen in 1971 and made his last appearance in 1988’s The Dead Pool. “Torino” is set to hit theaters in December.

You know, much as I hate to say it, he might be right. After all, Eastwood’s not getting any younger, and we wouldn’t want anyone else playing the part, would we? Unless they franchised it into the next generation, like they’re doing with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (with Shia LaBeouf’s character perhaps taking the reins from Indy).

And just in case you need a refresher course:
