James Cameron: Avatar is "the most challenging film I’ve ever made"
“Avatar: The Last Airbender” is pretty big around this house. My 13-year-old son has tried several times to explain the Nickelodeon show, to no avail.
The premise is fascinating, and I love that it makes kids think. But I guess I’ve already got too much stuff to keep track of. Adding Air Nomads, Water Tribes, and Badgermoles into the mix just puts me over the edge.
Anyway, that’s nothing compared to the upcoming feature film, Avatar, from director James Cameron. As I understand it, this is NOT related to the Nick show, but it sounds just as complicated. Ok, way more complicated.
More after the jump…
Coming to theaters on Dec. 18, 2009, the film takes place in the future. Jake (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na’vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.
Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang (remember him from Crime Story?) also star, as well as CCH Pounder, who starred in one of my favorite movies ever, Bagdad Cafe.
The Hollywood Reporter just published an interview with James Cameron, who said he expects “Avatar” to be about 60% CG animation (based on characters created using a newly developed performance capture-based process) and 40% live action, with a lot of VFX in the imagery). “It is the most challenging film I’ve ever made,” he said.
