Marie Antoinette Review

by Leora Israel Zellman on March 8th, 2007

Marie Antoinette

Last week I rented Kirsten Dunst’s movie Marie Antoinette and was skeptical as to how good it would be. I was pleasantly surprised however by this film. The costumes and sets are GORGEOUS and totally deserving of the Academy Award for best costume design. Here’s a taste of some of the lavish costumes:

I enjoyed the movie and actually my husband ended up watching it with me when he saw a few minutes of it and was intrigued. I’m not much of a history buff so I had to check Wikipedia for some information about the real Marie Antoinette to see how accurate the movie was. There are actually varying views on what Marie Antoinette was like and Sofia Coppola takes the nicer approach. Sure she spent loads of money on gowns and whatnot but she was a young girl and didn’t really know what she was doing to the people of France.

I only have two big problems with this movie. #1 the lack of proper accents. Kirsten definitely didn’t sound like an Austrian living in France and nobody sounded French at all. #2 without giving too much away, I felt like the ending was as dramatic as I expected it to be.

Fun movie though, rent it today!
