My Favorite Holiday Movies
by Jeanne on December 25th, 2007
For me, the holiday season is a time when music and food are important but, it’s the movies that make the season magical. We have a ritual in our house about the movies we watch and the order in which we watch them (we also add holiday specials and other movies that come out or air on television).
Here’s a look at my Top 5 Favorite Holiday Movies:
|
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
Why I love it: It’s silly and cheesy but it’s got all of the elements of a good family movie - fighting, food, surprise guests, mishaps involving Christmas lights, squirrel attacks and feuding neighbors. There’s even a kidnapping!

A Christmas Story (1983)
Why I love it: Who can’t relate to Ralphie and Randy Parker? The snowsuits, daring kids to stick their tongues on lamp posts, wanting a present that everyone says is too dangerous, wacky parents and one heck of a disappointing message from the Little Orphan Annie!

Elf (2003)
Why I love it: Will Ferrell didn’t win any awards for his turn as a human who was raised believing he was an elf but his performance is nothing short of spectacular. When he’s in the toy store and they announce that Santa is coming, his reaction is so funny, I have to rewind it over and over.

Gremlins (1984)
Why I love it: I guess this is a strange choice but I love the dark side that this movie brings to Christmas. Yeah, it’s got evil little monsters but it’s also about not taking things for granted and, most importantly, about not getting your kids things that they aren’t responsible enough to have!

It’s a Wonderful Life (1947)
Why I love it: It is honest - George Bailey is just a regular guy who has some unfortunate things happen in his life. He loses sight of what is important and takes the love he has around him for granted. One fateful night, he comes to understand all that he stands too lose.
