My Top Five Movies of 2007
Here we are at the end of another year! I thought I would pay tribute to my favorite movies of 2007! Here we go!
#5 - "Knocked Up"
This movie isn’t Oscar-worthy but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t great! Written and directed by Judd Apatow, this summer flick hit all the right notes - it’s funny, tender, dramatic, romantic and modern all at once! Katherine Heigl (as Alison Scott) and Seth Rogen (as Ben Stone) had great on-screen chemistry as two people who, after a one night stand, learn they are about to become parents. Their story unfolds realistically with both of them making many mistakes as they try to make their way through this unplanned pregnancy. It’s really heartwarming and deserves a spot on my Top 5! Here’s a look at how the movie performed:
- Box Office Total: $148,734,225
- Box Office Opening: $30,690,990
- No. of Weeks in Top 10: 8
- Highest Ranking: 2
More after the jump!
#4 - "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"
I love the books, I love the movies but THIS was the best one in terms of how it was adapted into a screenplay. The creation of "Dumbledore’s Army" and the development of Harry Potter’s dark side was done very well but it was the last 30 minutes that set this movie apart from the earlier HP films. The showdown with the Deatheaters and the demonstration of Voldemort’s powers had my heart racing. I saw it on opening day, watched in on the plane ride home from a trip to Las Vegas last month and then watched it again when it came out on video. This is my favorite HP to date! Here’s a look at how the movie performed:
- Box Office Total: $291,980,108
- Box Office Opening: $77,108,414
- No. of Weeks at #1: 1
- No. of Weeks in Top 10: 6
#3 - "Superbad"
This movie was "Supergood" and I don’t care who thinks I’m crazy! The realistic exchange between Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) brought me back to my high school days (which weren’t that long ago, thank you very much). The comedic timing between all of the cast members was great but it was McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) who stole the show. Almost everyone can relate (either directly or through friends and family) to what these kids go through one night as they try to score booze for a pre-graduation party. Here’s a look at how the movie performed:
- Box Office Total: $121,463,226
- Box Office Opening: $33,052,411
- No. of Weeks at #1: 2
- No. of Weeks in Top 10: 6
#2 - "300"
WOW!!! This movie is incredible! There’s treason, action, debauchery, blood, romance and everything in between! Gerard Butler pulled out all the stops in the leading role as King Leonidas, leading a mere force of 300 men, set out to fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. His on-screen wife played by actress, Lena Headey, was equally commanding. This movie is visually stunning and not just from a cinematography viewpoint. The cast is not a bunch of 20-year-olds trying to play veteran warriors - they are age-appropriate and looking good. Lena Headey is gorgeous and in the battle scenes, watch the bouncing, toned thighs of the warriors (especially Gerard Butler) - this movie sizzles!!! Here’s a look at how the movie performed:
- Box Office Total: $210,592,590
- Box Office Opening: $70,885,301
- No. of Weeks at #1: 2
- No. of Weeks in Top 10: 6
#1 - "Transformers"
THIS WAS IT FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!! I have loved "Transformers" since I was a kid and not in a normal way - I still have the original collector’s catalogue. When I heard they were making a movie, I avoided hearing about it. I didn’t want to see it. I couldn’t bear to have them ruin something that was so special to me. Then, a few days before it premiered, I saw a commercial (and it was a good one!) and everything changed. I got tickets for the first showing and sat, nervous, in my seat. When that first "transforming" sound came through the speakers, I actually started tearing up. It was still early in the movie so I remained guarded. Shia LaBeouf as Sam was an outstandingly good choice and he really won me over. In fact, the whole cast was great (Josh Duhamel and the military family man was an excellent touch). When Sam and Mikaela (Megan Fox) first meet Optimus Prime on that deserted street I could barely hear because my heart was pounding so hard - it was like seeing an old friend. For the most part, I was happy with the Autobots but I was a bit disappointed in the faces of the Decepticons, particularly Megatrons but I didn’t let that ruin it for me. This movie pulled off some amazing scenes and I can’t wait for the sequel - Transformers 2 has been announced for a 2009 release! Here’s a look at how the movie performed:
- Box Office Total: $319,014,499
- Box Office Opening: $70,502,384
- No. of Weeks at #1: 1
- No. of Weeks in Top 10: 5

I didn’t see a lot of movies this past year, but Superbad definitely tops my list. It’s not dumb humor at all - I wouldn’t be ashamed.

I am simply going to say that I respect that you are entitled to your own opinions, but if these five are your best of 2007, I have to ask: how many movies you actually saw this year? Because in my opinion there were soo many other, better movies than these five that were released last year. The Simpsons Movie comes to mind, as does the Borne Ultimatum, and I thought Juno was a better Superbad and Knocked Up than Superbad and KNocked Up could ever hope to be.

The Unruly One - I saw a lot of movies this year, actually. These are just the ones I enjoyed best. I hated The Simpsons Movie. I wish I could respond to that last sentence but I’m not sure what you meant.
Bourne Ultimatum was not as good as the first two, in my opinion. I actually found it departed from being somewhat believable, which is what I had enjoyed about Identity and Supremacy.

One more thing, I said these were my “favorite” movies - not the best ones :)
