New in Theatres This Week

by Administrator on January 7th, 2006

This week is gamer week at the movie theatres! I don’t know why I put an exclamation mark there, perhaps to hide my extreme dismay that the most exciting things I have to point out about the releases this weekend is a Uwe Boll movie and Grandma’s Boy.

I don’t even need to mention the title of the first movie, it’s irrelevant for the most part in the face of the extreme amounts of suck that the name Uwe Boll automatically attaches to any project. But if you must know, his lastest venture is Bloodrayne, the tale of a vampiric vengeance seeker. This is Boll’s interpretive (oh god…) prequel to the popular Majesco video game, and it should be so delightfully bad that it just might be good. At the very least I’ll be adding it to my cheesy vampire movie collection with Van Helsing. Ingrid, my co-editor over at Play-Girlz, is trying to cajole me to go see in theatres, and while I would normally consider it a horrendous waste of money, I might do it just to spite her because she’s stuck in France and won’t get to see it until 2009.

Grandma’s Boy is about a loser gamer whose lack of ambition and concern about anything non-pixellated makes him the biggest dork on the block. Until, that is, he tells all of his equally loser-ish gaming friends that he’s moved in with a bunch of hot babes. The problem is that the hot babes are all over double his age…and one is his grandma. Bum bum bummm…do you see where this is going?

Though I would class all three major releases this week as horror, the one true horror flick is Hostel, which from the trailer and website info, looks pretty darn scary. Having stayed in a number of hostels all over Europe, I can vouch that some of them are a little sketchy, but I’ve never been attacked by a maniac. This one looks promising for thriller fans, and is the strongest release of the week.

Hahaha… I really hope it’s so bad it’s good. As opposed to so bad it’s a total waste of time. Vampire movies tend to walk a very fine line between the two. My favorite “bad” vampires movie is Razor Blade Smile. It’s so much fun to make fun of.
