Film Gecko

New on DVD: July 8, 2008

by Jane Boursaw on July 8th, 2008

Kind of a mix of this and that on DVD this week, though nothing that really gets me in a tizzy. I liked Stop-Loss. Hated Superhero Movie. That’s about all I can say about this week’s DVDs. Very exciting.

Stop-Loss (2008). Ryan Phillippe and Abbie Cornish star in this war pic about Iraq veterans struggling to fit in after returning home. Gecko Review

Superhero Movie (2008). After being bitten by a genetically altered dragonfly, high school loser Rick Riker (Drake Bell) develops superhuman abilities. Yep, it’s another parody. Gecko Review

The Ruins (2008). A Mexican holiday takes a tragic turn when they check out some old ruins in the jungle. Gecko Preview & Trailer

More after the jump…

Sleepwalking (2008). A young man (Nick Stahl) ill-equipped to raise his abandoned niece (AnnaSophia Robb) is forced to take responsibility when faced with the prospect of losing her to a foster home. Official Site

Batman Begins (2005), Limited Edition Gift Set. Lots of great Batman stuff coming out in preparation for The Dark Knight (July 18). This looks like a cool set. Includes the two-disc special edition DVD version of Batman Begins plus an all-new disc with an exclusive two-minute sneak peek of The Dark Knight, Hollywood Movie Money to see The Dark Knight in theaters (a $7.50 value), a 128MB flash drive including 18 images from The Dark Knight, a Batman Begins lenticular, and five collectible Batman Begins post cards. (Movie Money ticket offer expires 8/18/08. Valid in participating theaters only.) Check it out here.

The Ruins looked kind of cool. But I’ve lost all sense of sympathy for kids who insist on going to remote locations that the locals say are haunted. JUST STOP DOING IT AND YOU WILL LIVE!
