Bewitched

Just in time for the orange and black, we’ve got a few spook-tacular movies out on DVD this week that are perfect for your Hallowe’en bash.

Bewitched, based on the smash 1960’s television hit of the same name, stars Nicole Kidman as the un-wartiest witch in the history of witches. The story does not follow the series at all, but rather takes place in modern day San Fernando Valley, where good witch Isabel (Kidman) has decided to forsake her powers and live a normal life, while struggling actor Jack (Will Ferrell) spies her and believes that casting her in a remake of Bewitched with him will rejuvenate his career. Although critics were less than enchanted, it might be a good bet for light-hearted Hallowe’en fun.

If you’re more of a traditionalist, and prefer a good scare on Pumpkin Day, there are a couple of horror/thrillers out this week that should be able to give you the shivers for one reason or another. First up we have House of Wax, where (in typical horror fashion) 6 friends decide to go on a little road trip. Of course they become stranded in a strange little town with strange happenings and must escape before the killer makes them the newest exhibit in the town’s local attraction, a house of wax. I’m not sure what would scare me more about this movie…demented killers, or having to look at Paris Hilton for that long.

Also up for scare enthusiasts is Dominion, prequel to the head-spinning Exorcist. Greedy collectors and buried evil things feature prominently in this movie, set in the hot East African sun. Father Merrin, a Dutch priest who has lost confidence in both man and God, leaves his homeland following the atrocities of World War II only to find himself involved in a horror beyond anything he could have imagined.

Other new rentals include:

Herbie: Fully Loaded - loveable VW bug Herbie takes on the NASCAR scene
Rize - a documentary of the urban dance trend called krump
Last Days - angsty successful artist story
Melinda and Melinda - love and relationships get the Woody Allen treatment
Noel - touchy feely Christmas movie about 5 New Yorkers
Travellers and Magicians - two men in Bhutan want more from life than their villages can offer
Mysterious Skin - coming of age in small town Kansas
• Social Genocide - documentary look at the civil uprising in Argentina in 2001
