Oscar Watch: Gecko Smackdown

by Jane Boursaw on February 23rd, 2008

The Gecko Bloggers have made their predictions for the top six Oscars. Have you? See if you agree with ours:

Best Picture:

Atonement

Juno

Michael Clayton

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

Jeanne Picks: “No Country For Old Men,” because it terrified me more than any horror movie this year ever could. The writing, the acting and the camera work came together to make an incredible film.

Jane Picks: “No Country For Old Men,” because it’s a beautifully bleak look at the harsh realities of life that grabs you at the opening and keeps you hooked through the end credits.

More after the jump…

Best Actor:

George Clooney

Daniel Day-Lewis

Johnny Depp

Michael Clayton

There Will Be Blood

Sweeney Todd

Tommy Lee Jones

Viggo Mortensen

In the Valley of Elah

Eastern Promises

Jeanne Picks: It’s hard to pick one since Javier Bardem was so outstanding in the supporting role, but I’d have to go with Daniel Day-Lewis since he really immersed himself into the role.

Jane Picks: Daniel Day-Lewis, because he must have gone home in pain after playing that grating part so intensely every day.

Best Actress:

Cate Blanchett

Julie Christie

Marion Cotillard

Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Away From Her

La Vie en Rose

Ellen Page

Laura Linney

Juno

The Savages

Jeanne Picks: Ellen Page. The extremely well-written dialogue seemed to just roll off her tongue as if they really were her words. Her timing and delivery was strong, yet delicate and vulnerable at times.

Jane Picks: Ellen Page, because she made your heart sing and cry at the same time.

Best Supporting Actor:

Casey Affleck

Javier Bardem

Hal Holbrook

Assass. of Jesse James

No Country For Old Men

Into the Wild

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Tom Wilkinson

Charlie Wilson’s War

Michael Clayton

Jeanne Picks: Javier Bardem was extraordinary and so genuine in this role. When I watched it on DVD, I had to pause and take a break a few times because he was so intense.

Jane Picks: Javier Bardem, because he delivered such a believable killer-with-no-remorse character.

Best Supporting Actress:

Cate Blanchett

Ruby Dee

Saoirse Ronan

I’m Not There

American Gangster

Atonement

Amy Ryan

Tilda Swinton

Gone Baby Gone

Michael Clayton

Jeanne Picks: Ruby Dee, mostly because I think more people from “American Gangster” should have been nominated, and she’s representing them well.

Jane Picks: Amy Ryan, because she made you both hate and feel sorry for her and the circumstances that threw all the wrong rocks her way.

Best Director:

Jason Reitman

Julian Schnabel

Tony Gilroy

Juno

Diving Bell & the Butterfly

Michael Clayton

Paul Thomas Anderson

Ethan Coen & Joel Coen

There Will Be Blood

No Country For Old Men

Jeanne Picks: The Coen brothers for creating a dark, dark film that didn’t leave you thinking “okay, that would never happen.”  Instead, the movie’s strength was in the fact that the events were all too imaginable.

Jane Picks: Ethan and Joel Coen, because they didn’t shirk from the realities of desperation, but rather dove in head first.

Amy Ryan was fantastic, and she deserves the award in a perfect world, but she played such an unlikeable character. I’m not sure the Academy can get over that.
