Sometimes you have a movie that’s pretty funny overall, but includes one scene that just ruins the rest of the movie. Such is the case with “Yes Man,” starring Jim Carrey as a guy who’s always said “no” his whole life, but gets roped into a Tony Robbins-type seminar where he starts saying “Yes” to everything. The messiah-type leader, played by Terence Stamp, awkwardly forces him to make a covenant on the “yes” thing.
You can imagine the implications of saying “yes” to everything! There are lots of things you probably shouldn’t say “yes” to, so it puts Carrey’s character, Carl Allen, into some interesting situations. The scene I mentioned involves an older woman (we’re talking 70s or 80s) who, uh, pleasures Carl. She approaches him, and when he tries to say no, bad things start to happen, so he goes back to saying “yes.” It’s all very awkward - for Carl and for the movie audience.

One thing you have to say about Tom Cruise is that he has a sense of humor! I’ve always thought he’s the best at working the press and respecting his fans, and lately, he’s been getting back in the public’s good graces by doing a slammin’ job of being funny, being cool, and well, being everywhere (promoting his upcoming film, “Valkyrie”)! Check out this clip of Tom Cruise doing his own Top Ten list on David Letterman:

What if you were a loser (hypothetically speaking, because no Film Gecko reader is a loser), and found a book on how to prevent an alien invasion of the Earth? And then had to use that knowledge when one actually occurs?
Such is the premise of “The How-To Guide for Saving the World,” an action comedy picked up by MGM with Barry Sonnenfeld attached to direct and produce.
Apparently, the script by BenDavid Grabinski landed enough votes among execs to make this year’s unofficial Black List of “most liked” screenplays.

You know, that Harrison Ford really kicks ass, doesn’t he? And I don’t mean in an “Indiana Jones” kind of way - I mean when great actors continue to make movies as they get older. Not that he’s old or anything - he’s only 66, for cripes sakes - but I’m just really glad he’s still making movies, because he’s always been a favorite of mine.
Now he’s signed to play a TV personality in “Morning Glory,” a Paramount comedy that revolves around a morning talk show. Rachel McAdams is in final negotiations to star, as well.
Roger Michell (“Venus”) is attached to direct, with J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk producing through their Bad Robot banner.
The script was penned by Aline Brosh McKenna, which bodes well because she also wrote the fabulous script for “The Devil Wears Prada,”, one of my favorite chick-flicks of all time.

“Terminator Salvation” doesn’t hit theaters until May 22, 2008, but a fifth “Terminator” movie is already in the works.
During a break from filming “Terminator Salvation,” director McG announced at the Dubai International Film Festival that he’s developing a sequel.
No word on where it’ll be filmed, but the Middle East has been mentioned as a possible locale.
Christian Bale has signed to play John Connor for all three films. The next installment, after “Terminator Salvation,” is tentatively scheduled for a 2011 release.
Check out the trailer for “Terminator Salvation.”

“New Moon” has a release date! The sequel to “Twilight” is heading to theaters Nov. 20, 2009.
On that same day, it’ll be up against Warner Bros.’ “Sherlock Holmes,” starring Robert Downey, Jr., Sony’s “Planet 51,” and MGM’s untitled “Three Stooges” project. That doesn’t seem so daunting, not that it would matter.
A story in Variety says the “New Moon” folks are looking to replicate their box office success by premiering the next movie on a similar date as “Twilight.” Really, though, I don’t think it matters when “New Moon” premieres. If the movie aired only one time at 2 a.m., theaters would be packed with fans.
The film franchise most associated with Thanksgiving is Warner Bros.’ “Harry Potter.” But there are only three films left in that series, with just one bowing over Thanksgiving, in 2010.
So with three upcoming movies in the “Twilight” franchise, I’m guessing they’ll take over that Thanksgiving release date.
Chris Weitz recently signed to direct “New Moon,” taking over from “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke.
