Paul Newman: The Passing of a Legend - VIDEO

by Jane Boursaw on September 27th, 2008

Not many actors reach legendary status, but Paul Newman definitely falls into that category. The world lost a true actor, humanitarian, race car driver, popcorn/salad dressing impresario, and all-around good guy when Newman died yesterday at his farmhouse in Westport, Connecticut after a long battle with cancer. He was 83.

In May 2007, Newman told ABC’s ”Good Morning America” that he’d given up acting, though he intended to remain active in charity projects. “I’m not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to,” he said. “You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that’s pretty much a closed book for me.”

When I think of Paul Newman, the first thing that pops into my head is 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, one of the greatest buddy movies of all time, and that infamous line, “Who ARE those guys?”

More photos and videos after the jump…

I think it’s time for me to do a Paul Newman marathon, watching all of this great movies: Absence of Malice, The Verdict, The Sting, The Hustler, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Color of Money, and dozens of others. He was nominated for an Oscar 10 times, winning one regular and two honorary awards.

He and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward had one of those rare, long-running Hollywood marriages (50 years). When asked if he was ever tempted to stray, he famously told Playboy magazine, “I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?” They wed in 1958, around the same time they both appeared in 1958’s The Long Hot Summer. Newman also directed Woodward in several films, including Rachel, Rachel and The Glass Menagerie.

More recently, he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the 2005 HBO drama Empire Falls and also provided the voice of a crusty 1951 car in the 2006 Disney-Pixar hit, Cars.

And of course, we all know of his humanitarian efforts. He gave millions to charities through his food company, and also set up Hole-in-the-Wall camps for severely ill kids. What a contribution he’s made to our lives, our country, and the entire world. Rest in peace, Paul.

Deb - Thanks for the note and link. His passing is such a loss to the world, and I’ve been blue since I heard about it yesterday. Such a loss to the world, but he left a great legacy in so many ways.
