Peter Jackson To Produce "The Hobbit"

by Jeanne on December 18th, 2007

Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have finally come to an agreement - Jackson has officially signed on to produce J.R.R. Tolkien’s "The Hobbit."  It will come in the form of a two-film prequel to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Jackson directed the "Rings" films but, despite their huge success (they brought in nearly $3 billion collectively worldwide) his relationship with New Line had deteriorated.  No director has been announced for "The Hobbit."

"I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

As was the case with the "Rings" movies, the upcoming "Hobbit" films are going to be shot simultaneously.  Production is set to begin in 2009 with the first movie’s release planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for 2011.

Well, this is exciting news!  I love the books, I think he did the "Rings" trilogy justice (I thought the ending of "The Return of the King" was a little drawn out, though) and I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with "The Hobbit."
