"Quantum Hoops: The Caltech Basketball Story" Review

Ever feel like a real loser? Yeah, me too. But if anyone knows the true meaning of the word, it’s the Caltech basketball team. It boasted a 21-year losing streak — over 245 consecutive losses! Yes, 245.

But in the world of brains, Caltech is definitely a winner. Located in Pasadena, the California Institute of Technology is the West Coast version of MIT, turning out Nobel Prize winners, tech geniuses, and scientific advisors to Presidents.

Caltech is considered one of the top five academic institutions in the world, but its athletic department leaves something to be desired. Where else would you find a team with more valedictorians than players with high school basketball experience? It’s definitely a different take on the world of college athleticism. In his first feature-length film, director Rick Greenwald chronicles the 2006 Caltech basketball team in their quest for a single win. They’re not looking for a championship here. They just want to win one game! Narrated by actor David Duchovny, the odds are stacked clearly against them, but as the year unfolds, the story gets both exciting and heartwarming.

Revenge of the nerds? Yeah, maybe. I won’t tell you how it ends, because I want you to see the film. Let’s just say this season is quite a turnaround from two years earlier, when the team would lose by an average margin of over 60 points per game.

If you like underdog sports films or are sick of the car-chases, explosions and gunfights at the mainstream theaters, pick up a copy of Quantum Hoops. It makes you think twice about what it means to be a winner.

DVD Bonus Features: 30-Minute Featurette on the 2008 Caltech Women’s Basketball Team; Commentary by Director Rick Greenwald; Commentary by Head Coach Roy Dow.
