Reviews from the Couch, Pt. 2

by Jane Boursaw on July 8th, 2008

Still recovering from the flu (told you it was a doozy), but luckily I watched a few pretty good movies today I hadn’t seen before:

I Robot (2004). Been meaning to see this since it first came out, and it’s definitely worth a couple hours of time. Will Smith plays a detective sometime in the future where robots are commonplace as house-servants, bartenders, and the like. But he doesn’t trust them, and when one goes rogue, he sets out to find out why. Great special effects.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). This has been on my to-watch list for so long, it’s ridiculous. Glad I finally got the chance to watch it, because even though it’s kind of a festering, angst-ridden movie that makes you want to rip your eyes out, the performances by Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio are well worth it. Juliette Lewis also turns in a sweet performance. Depp plays Gilbert Grape, a guy who’s doing his best to keep his rag-tag family together since his dad died years ago. DiCaprio plays his retarded brother. Watching that performance, you’d swear that he’s actually retarded. And Darlene Cates turns in an amazing performance as their morbidly obese mom. The respectful way Gilbert treats her is a lesson for every kid.

The Mummy (1999). Trying to catch up on these movies before the next installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, hits theaters on August 1, 2008. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz star in this action flick that blends mysticism, ancient Egypt, a genormous treasure, and of course, plenty of mummies who love to torture the human folk. It’s long and scary in parts — plenty of icky bug scenes — but well worth a peek if you like action movies. Not for young kids.
