Saw II

by Administrator on September 28th, 2005

I found it predictable, overly cliched and the Jigsaw puppet frankly just wasn’t that scary. But Saw was still one of the biggest thriller films of last year. The acting was decent (although it tainted my image of Cary Elwes as Wesley in The Princess Bride), the special effects were okay, but it was the flashing of caped villians, manipulation of weak underlings, and the far too opened ended (ie. We’re going to make a sequel out of this and milk it for all it’s worth) conclusion made the whole thing a bit of a yawn.

I’m hoping that Jigsaw round two will be a more terrifying experience. It seems that they’ve gone the “bigger is better” route, with the number of kidnapped victims quadrupled to eight, and Donnie Wahlberg brought in to play the lead, who must race against the clock (and Jigsaw) to unravel a trail of murder and mayhem and save the day. A lack of identification with the characters made it difficult for me to care much whether they lived or died, and that’s one area that I hope will be vastly improved. One would think that amongst the eight poor souls trapped in Jigsaw’s web of torture, that I will be able to find at least one to pity.

Producers are betting that another Hallowe’en release will be just the thing to snag a nice take, as trick or treaters file in to the theatres wanting to be thoroughly spooked. Saw II, with the by-line “Oh yes, there will be blood”, may be just the ticket. The movie has already made some waves in the media with its advertising. Its promotional poster, showing two severed fingers, has been banned from public display in some places. Hopefully the movie will shock and appall just as much as the ads, but we’ll have to wait and see until October. Meanwhile, have a look at the trailer, and there are some frightening looking stills circulating as well.

Donnie Wahlberg has proven himself to be quite the actor and may be the one saving grace for Saw II. We’ll see….

I enjoyed Saw and am looking forward to II. It was one of the best thrillers I’ve seen in quite some time.

Here’s a picture of the old ‘banned’ poster and the new ‘approved’ poster. Hee, the MPAA cracks me up. Dumbasses.

I’m hoping Saw 2 will utilize the idea of the killer’s method, which is the most fascinating part. The ‘two guys in a room’ focus of the first movie wasn’t nearly as interesting as the intercut Rube Goldberg-type murders.

I agree with you completely Rhys, that the movie poster kerfuffle was kind of stupid. I find the approved version to be even more disgusting than the first..I can’t stand to look at those fingernails, they make me nauseous.

Michelle & Nick, it seems that we’ll all just take an optimistic outlook and hope for the best yes? For me, that it surpasses the original and for you Nick, that it doesn’t let you down after giving you a good ride the first time.

IMHO you’re not really supposed to identify with any of them, except for maybe Daniel. If you look at the sections in the house from a humerous angle than a straight horror angle than it becomes much more watchable. Scenes like the guy getting his head blown off because someone used the key on the door after reading a note that says “do not use this key on the door”, some guy waltzing into an oven and then looking all shocked when it starts burning, someone getting trapped by blythly sticking her hands in a hole without looking to see what it is first in a house full of deathtraps-when there’s a key on the other side-all of these things are just amusing to me. If they possessed the survival instinct they would be much more cautious about, say, entering an oven. It’s also worth noting that any and all of the traps that are in the house are easily diffused by just one other person helping-the oven door could be propped open, someone could unlock the box trap, if everyone searched the needle pit it would have taken less time, and the safe one is obvious. They didn’t, though. Which is why I enjoy the Saw movies-it shows that, by and large, people are too stupid to live. :)
