Sci-Fi Western
Well I finally found a free evening to go check out Serenity (you may remember that I was late seeing it last time, so I watched a Disney movie instead).
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. There were plenty of reasons why I could have disliked it, like sub-par acting on most fronts, over-abundance of startling clips (you know the kind I mean, where something jumps out at you). But in the end I actually really liked this movie.
Most of the strength of this comes from the characters. They are a motley crew aboard a junky transport ship, and they live 500 years in the future. There are many inhabitted planets now, all “governed” by the Alliance. You are meant to hate the Alliance right off the bat, but you never really get there. Oh, and there is a race of Cannibals that you are supposed to fear, but you never really get there either.
The movie has some very nice visual effects, some pretty good action, and it’s all pretty humurous throughout. The main characters all speak with a cow-boy era dialect, making for an interesting juxtaposition, Cowboys in Space. They use phrases like “I don’t reckon to like you much” and “let’s bed down here for nightfall”, you know, this type of thing.
In the end the characters are what saves this movie, and even bumps it up to enjoyable. I found myself genuinely caring about who lived and who died in this movie. They were out to stop the Alliance and save the Universe, and I found that I didn’t care much if they succeeded, but I wanted them to live anyway. I can’t remember another movie quite like this one, so if you are in the mood for an interesting Western film set in Space, check out Serenity
