Sequel-icious

by Erin Harvey on January 10th, 2006

The never-ending stream of remakes and remixes continues, with yours truly to guide you through the rumours, confirmations, and proclamations of “oh no…not another one!”

We’ve got a veritable Super Team of super hero sequels and spinoffs on the go, from the confirmed production of the Fantastic Four 2. Fox was pretty coy about its existence for a while, waiting until the perfect marketing moment (the release of the first film on DVD) to excite comic enthusiasts with the news that the entire cast has agreed to return for a second film. Writer- director team Mark Frost and Tim Storywill also return, and the movie is set for release in the summer of 2007.

Rumour-turned greenlit fact, is that Hugh Jackman, dashingly dangerous face of the X-Men’s Wolverine, is finalizing negotiations to begin filming a solo film centered on his adamantium-infused alter-ego. Keeping with the grit of Wolverine, Jackman is set on excluded martial arts and “pretty stuff”, and maintaining his character as a street-brawling hero.

Sarah Michelle Gellar also enters the sequel race, not with a Buffy spinoff, but with The Grudge 2, where she is still haunted by the evil thing with the long black hair. Although it has long been confirmed that writer Stephen Susco and director Takashi Shimizu, who both worked on the first film, would return, but lead roles were un-decided until recently.

And just in case you haven’t had enough of The Mummy yet, there’s a third go-round for this series. No Egypt this time by the sounds of things; this time the evil is in 1940’s China. According to the IESB, the screenplay deals with “China’s first uber-Emperor Qin Shihuang… Wang wants to take over the world by releasing his army of warriors who were cursed and turned into terracotta statues a few millennia ago.” Oooo…

Strangest sequel news? Back To The Future…4. Michael J. Fox is looking at returning to his Marty McFly days, but only if the studios agree to make the character close to his real life age. I pick this movie as my “Flogging a Very Dead Horse” nomination for this round of sequels.
