The upcoming 2006 Sundance Film Festival marks the 25th year that the venerable indie movie showcase has hit Utah with the fresh and infamous. Founder Robert Redford shaped it into the ‘in’ place for ‘in’ people over the years and it’s likely the most well known of the North American film festivals. It has started to come under criticism for the infiltration of mainstream movies and questionable ‘indie’ status but this year’s festival boasts, says director Geoffrey Gilmore, “no confusion between the films we’re showing and anything the studios would have even considered making”.

Perennial festies can download their very own copy of the proceeding schedule in PDF form from the official Sundance site, but I would suggest reading through Eugene Hernandez’s look at the line-up at indieWIRE. He’s written a lengthy piece with descriptions of all the categories and movies that will be shown during the week and a half long party.
