Watchmen, Coraline, Stargate SG-1 on DVD / Blu-ray This Week

July 21, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Most excellent DVDs and Blu-ray discs are hitting store and cyber-shelves this week. Here’s the rundown of my faves:

Watchmen (Director’s Cut): Someone’s killing former superheroes! Read my review of this dark and gritty comic noir film starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, and Billy Crudup. [Buy DVD] [Buy Blu-ray]

Coraline. Dakota Fanning voices the main character in this animated story about a little girl who finds an alternative reality right in her own home. It’s a little scary for young ones, but ok for kids 12 and older. Read my review here. [Buy DVD] [Buy Blu-ray]

Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods – Final Cut. This isn’t a movie per se; it’s the feature-length pilot episode of "Stargate SG-1" that’s been remastered and re-cut by series Executive Producer Brad Wright. [Buy DVD]

The pilot stars Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill, leading a team on a mission to Abydos to defeat fierce warriors led by the vicious Ra.  With the threat of the brutal Goa’uld hanging over the galaxy, the team must succeed, or General Hammond (Don S. Davis) will unleash an apocalyptic solution!

Product Features:

  • New Edit with Never-Viewed Scenes
  • New and Enhanced Visual Effects
  • Revoiced Performance by Christopher Judge
  • Original Score by Joel Goldsmith
  • Special Features includes: Commentary by Co-Creator Brad Wright and Actor Richard Dean Anderson and "Back to the Beginning" Featurette

Watchmen coming to DVD, Blu-ray on July 21

July 7, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

“Watchmen” is coming to DVD and Blu-ray on July 21. Did you see the movie? It got mixed reviews, but I liked it well enough, though don’t recommend it for kids younger than 16. Read my review here.

The film follows a group of superheroes who are being killed off one by one, and have to come back together after being estranged to face down evil. Here’s a clip of what I like to call “the big blue naked guy” to refresh your memory:

12 Images from The Code with Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas

June 24, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

I just posted a little tidbit about Antonio Banderas doing nude scenes as he turns 50 years old, so I thought I’d post a few stills from "The Code" (said movie in which he strips down).

Also known as "Thick as Thieves," "The Code" bypassed theaters and went straight to DVD yesterday. The story follows a veteran thief, Keith Ripley (Morgan Freeman), who recruits a younger crook, Gabriel Martin (Antonio Banderas), to help him pull one final job so he can repay his debt to the Russian mob. But what Ripley doesn’t know is that the younger crook is actually a Miami cop working with the NYPD to bring him to justice.

Gabriel gets involved in a romance with Ripley’s goddaughter, Alexandra (Radha Mitchell). When they get around to pulling the final job, a Russian mobster kidnaps the goddaughter and demands two Faberge eggs stolen in return.

Directed by Mimi Leder (a veteran filmmaker whose credits go back to "China Beach" and "Hill Street Blues"), "The Code" is rated R for sexuality, language and some nudity. With Freeman and Banderas, it sounds like a lovely game of cat-and-mouse shenanigans. Buy it on DVD or Blu-ray.

April 1, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

That crazy little pup known as Marley hit DVD this week. It’s a great movie, but I thought it was too intense for a PG rating and should have been rated PG-13. Do you agree with me?

New on DVD this week:

Marley and Me (single-disc and 2-Disc Bad Boy Edition). Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston star in this real-life story about a couple and their unruly dog. [Film Gecko Review] [Trailer] [Official Site] [Buy Single-Disc] [Buy 2-Disc]

Seven Pounds. Will Smith stars in this mysterious movie about a guy who grants strangers wishes in order to atone for a past mistake. But when he falls in love with a woman with heart problems (Rosario Dawson), his plan starts to unravel. [Trailer] [Official Site] [Buy It]

Slumdog Millionaire. Danny Boyle directed this touching story about an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai who’s competing on India’s "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Amazon is running a note that some of the DVDs are missing the special features. So if yours doesn’t include special features, call their hotline at (888) 223-4FOX to receive a replacement DVD.
