New Trailer for Surrogates – I’m just not into Bruce Willis with creepy hair

August 20, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

I’ve gotten so used to seeing Bruce Willis with no hair, that it’s just creepy seeing him WITH hair. Regardless, “Surrogates” looks like a fun sci-fi flick with lots of twists and turns.
Willis and Radha Mitchell star as FBI agents investigating the murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate program that allows people to create “perfect” versions of themselves. These remote controlled machines assume the person’s life roles, which means they never have to leave the comfort and safety of their own home. How boring.

Review: Bandslam (surprisingly good)

August 16, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Movie: Bandslam * Gecko Preview *  Official Site
In Theaters: Aug. 14, 2009

Runtime: 111 minutes
Directed by: Todd Graff; Produced by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas

MPAA Rating: PG for some thematic elements and mild language
Gecko Rating:

I take back my earlier thoughts about "Bandslam." If, like me, you were expecting something akin to "High School Musical," you’d be dead wrong!
Yes, there’s a teensy bit of sap in this movie, but nothing like the volume offered up in Disney’s HSM. This is Summit Entertainment, after all, which automatically kicks it to a different level. The soundtrack includes Lou Reed’s "Femme Fatale" and Steve … [Read More]

Check out the (comically misfit) characters in Mike Judge’s Extract

August 12, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

I just posted the trailer for Mike Judge’s Extract, and here’s a look at the characters. I’m probably most excited about this movie as any coming out this fall. The character descriptions are straight from the official Extract press site…
Joel (Jason Bateman) Jason Bateman plays Joel, the big boss at Reynolds Extract. If Joel hasn’t reached his front door by 8 o’clock, he’ll find his wife, Suzie (Kristen Wiig) cinching up her sweatpants – and about as interested in him as he is in her mastery of supermarket coupon design.
Sexually frustrated, Joel confides in … [Read More]

I’ll definitely be seeing Mike Judge’s Extract – Check out the trailer

August 12, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

The movie "Office Space" is one of my all-time favorites (with some of the best quotes ever!), and now my kids are old enough to watch it without me getting too cranky over the swearing, so that’s fun, too.
When I heard Mike Judge was coming out with a new movie called "Extract" … well, I’m all over that baby. In theaters Sept. 4, 2009, it’s another story that takes place in the comedy-fertile ground of the American workplace. This time, it’s a flavor extract company that employs – you guessed it – a bunch of misfit losers and loners. … [Read More]

Actor Zac Efron won a coveted Teen Choice surfboard for Choice Movie Actor in a Comedy, for his turn as Mike O’Donnell, the dad who gets to be "17 Again." The movie is on DVD now, and I thought it was sweet and funny; check out my review here.

Review: Julie & Julia (Girl next door makes good)

August 8, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Movie: Julie & Julia * 7 Clips * Official Site
In Theaters: Aug. 7, 2009

Runtime: 123 minutes
Directed by: Nora Ephron

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for brief strong language and some sensuality
Gecko Rating:

Sometimes I feel a lot like Julie Powell (Amy Adams). She’s a girl-next-door type who’s just trying to get by in the world, but coming up against roadblocks at every turn. Ok, I like my job a lot better than she likes hers, but I can certainly see where she’s coming from. We all need something to get us through the tough times, something that’s ours and ours alone, … [Read More]

RIP John Hughes

August 6, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

In my review of "I Love You, Beth Cooper" recently, I was lamenting that just because it’s a "teen" movie doesn’t mean it has to be dumb (which, frankly, that movie was). I cited John Hughes as a great example of a filmmaker who didn’t dumb down a movie just because it features teens or is targeted at teens.
Now the filmmaker extraordinaire has passed away at the age of 59 after suffering a heart attack during a morning walk while visiting family in Manhattan. His movies, including "The Breakfast Club," "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off," and "Sixteen Candles," never … [Read More]

Julia Roberts and James Franco on the set of Eat, Pray, Love

August 5, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Actress Julia Roberts and co-star James Franco were recently spotted filming a scene at Tompkins Park in New York for their upcoming film, “Eat, Pray, Love.”
Based on the popular memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, the story follows a woman who realizes she’s horribly unhappy in her marriage, so she takes off on a trip around the world to figure out what she wants in life.
It’s a tale of self-discovery that takes Gilbert (Roberts) to Italy, India and Indonesia, where as the title suggests, she eats, prays and loves.
Directed by Ryan Murphy, the movie also stars Javier Bardem, … [Read More]

Mary-Lynn Rajskub answers questions on Julie and Julia’s Twitter!

August 5, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Everyone’s on Twitter these days, and I was excited to see that “Julie and Julia” is following me.
The movie opens this Friday, and follows the story of cubicle worker Julie Powell (Amy Adams), who cooks her way through all the recipes in Julia Childs’ cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”
My daughter and I are psyched about seeing “Julie and Julia,” especially with Meryl Streep as Julia Child. Check out seven clips here, and a red carpet premiere pic here.
Mary-Lynn Rajskub, known to most of us as Jack Bauer’s steadfast friend Chloe on Fox’s “24,” plays the supportive, no-nonsense … [Read More]

Amy Adams to David Letterman: I cooked my brains out

July 30, 2009 by Jane Boursaw

Amy Adams made an appearance on David Letterman to talk about her new film, “Julie and Julia” (check out all of Film Gecko’s coverage here). I love Amy Adams. Seriously, I have a big old girl crush on her and can’t want to see this movie, in which she co-stars with Meryl Streep as a cubicle worker who decides to spice up her life by cooking all the recipes in Childs’ “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” In fact, Adams says she cooked her brains out. The movie opens in theaters Aug. 7, 2009.
