The Greatest Game Ever Played
Here at The Movie Weblog we try to bring a comprehensive look at all the….oh forget it. I was looking for a smart, professional way to introduce the idea that I went to see this movie, but the truth is I went because we were late for another film, and this one was just starting.
Okay, The Greatest Game Ever Played is a Disney release. This implies many things, but let’s start with the setting. It’s pre-Great War America, Boston to be exact, and the divide between the priveleged rich and the “great unwashed” is very wide indeed. Enter Frances Oimet, boy wonder.
The boy wants to play golf, but his Dad just won’t support him in that because he’s “trying to protect him.” This has been done a few too many times in my opinion, but all the same. The boy plays golf anyway, and shows remarkable talent, eventually playing in the U.S. Open, much to the chagrin of his work-a-day Pop.
I am a little concerned about spoiling this movie, but then again, it is a Disney movie so there are only so many directions it could go. But let’s talk about the “Disney” aspect of it.
Disney has at their disposal, from many great animated films in the past, a huge arsenal of computer generated effects and programs that can do just about anything on the screen. They use a number of them in this movie, which sometimes makes for some absolutely splendid shots, and sometimes is just a bit distracting. Actually, at one point I had to look away from the screen because the camera effect was literally making me sick to my stomach.
It’s a golf movie, a coming of age movie, and something sweet to bring your kids to. And it even pokes around with class struggles and inherited wealth. So, The Greatest Game Ever Played is not for everyone, but if you enjoy golf, or Disney then maybe give it a look.
