DVD: The Nightmare Before Christmas: Collector’s Edition 2-Disc Collector’s Ed. On DVD: August 26, 2008
Runtime: 76 minutes Directed by: Henry Selick
MPAA Rating: G Gecko Rating:

The Nightmare Before Christmas is out on DVD and Blu-ray today, in a special 2-Disc Collector’s Edition that’s been digitally remastered. What does that mean? More brilliance, clarity, and awesomeness. A lot of remastered DVDs claim that, but this one really means it. Plenty of cool bonus features, too.

Bored with his perennial role as Halloween Town’s frightening Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington (Danny Elfman/Chris Sarandon) wanders off and discovers the cheerful village of Christmas Town. Determined to shake things up in Halloween Town, he enlists the help of some mischievous trick-or-treaters to kidnap Santa Claus (Edward Ivory) and take over the job of delivering gifts to the children of the world himself.

More after the jump, including a “What’s This?” video clip…

When his plan goes awry, Jack attempts to restore Santa to his rightful place. But first, he must rescue St. Nick from the clutches of the evil Oogie Boogie (Ken Page).

It sounds creepier than it is. Some of the characters are a little scary, but overall, this movie is ok for kids 5 and older. What I love is that it’s different from other family movies and doesn’t talk down to kids. I expect nothing less from writer-producer Tim Burton.

The stop-motion animation, musical score by Danny Elfman, and three-dimensional sets also make for fun viewing. Other voices include Catherine O’Hara as Sally, William Hickey as Dr. Finkelstein, and Paul Reubens as Lock.

DVD BONUS FEATURES:

  • NEW!  What’s This? Jack’s Haunted Mansion Holiday Tour – Viewers choose the way they want to tour Disneyland’s Holiday Haunted Mansion.  “On Track” explores a tricked-out version of the Haunted Mansion, while “Off Track” reveals what went into creating all the creepy fun.
