"The Reader" - Preview and Trailer
Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes continue their trend of dramatic, quasi-off-beat movies with “The Reader.” There are a few actors you can always count on to bring something different to the table, rather than turning in one-note performances, and these two are on that list.
Stephen Daldry directs, and he, too, has a history of offbeat movies in his past, including “Billy Elliot” and “The Hours.”
More after the jump, including a trailer…
“The Reader” opens in post-WWII Germany with teenager Michael Berg becoming ill and being helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and finds Hanna to thank her, but the two are quickly drawn into a passionate and secretive love affair.
Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to (thus, the title), and so he reads to her from “The Odyssey,” “Huck Finn,” and “The Lady with the Little Dog.” But when Hanna mysteriously disappears one day, Michael is left confused and heartbroken.
Jump ahead eight years. Michael (Fiennes) is now a law student observing Nazi war crime trials, and he’s stunned to find Hanna (Winslet) back in his life – this time as a courtroom defendant whose past is revealed.
“The Reader” opens Jan. 9, 2009. It’s not yet rated, but I’m guessing PG-13 or R. Check out the trailer and see what you think:
