Transformers Movie Now in Theaters

by Leora Israel Zellman on July 11th, 2007

I don’t know about all of you out there, but I am so excited for the Transformers movie. Apparently I’m not the only one… it debuted with 67.6 million in ticket sales in the first weekend alone! Now all I need is some free time to go see it.

Transformers’ has smashed a series of box office records in its opening week.

The much-anticipated blockbuster raked in more than $29 million in the US over the American Independence Day weekend (04.07.07) - smashing the previous record of $21.9 million held by ‘Spider-Man 2’.

‘Transformers’ also claimed the biggest first week takings for a non-sequel in US history with a six-day total of $155.8 million, overtaking the first ‘Spider-Man’ film which took $151.6 million in 2002.

Since opening in cinemas worldwide, the film - starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel - has made $100 million outside the US.

The film - based on the Transformers toys and cartoon series - focuses on a clash between rival robot clans the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons.

The film also stars Jon Voight and John Turturro, with Peter Cullen voicing the role of Optimus Prime, the iconic Autobots leaders.

‘Transformers’ will finish its series of premieres when it opens in Japan on August 4.
