Kutcher and Diaz deliver cute but forgettable movie…

Some people are so adorable, it makes it worthwhile to sit through a completely forgettable movie. Such is the case with It Happens in Vegas, a movie starring Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz as two strangers who put the phrase “opposites attract” to the test.

More after the jump…

Diaz plays Joy McNally, an uptight control freak who’s unceremoniously dumped by her fiance (Jason Sudeikis) on the night she’d planned a big surprise party for his birthday. Instead of a fun-filled evening, the partygoers waiting to yell “Surprise!” are treated to a breakup. How humiliating.

Meanwhile, Jack Fuller (Kutcher) has no intention of ever getting married. He’s a slacker who revels in seeing different women every night, but gets a wake-up call when his dad (Treat Williams) fires him from the company furniture business.

The two NYC residents end up deciding to go to Las Vegas to forget their troubles — at the very same time, according to the storyline. I guess it could happen, but it seems so formulaic that they’d both yell “Vegas!” at exactly the same time while drowning their sorrows in different bars.

Yet another “this would never happen” event occurs when they accidentally end up sharing the same room in Vegas, along with their friends — Jack’s pal, Hater (Rob Corddry) and Joy’s pal, Tipper (Lake Bell).

After a night of drunken partying, Jack and Joy wake up to discover they’re married. They agree the marriage needs to be annulled, but things get complicated when Jack puts Joy’s quarter into a slot machine and wins a $3 million jackpot.

They return to NYC and take it before Judge Whopper (Dennis Miller) — yes, that’s really his name — who freezes the money and sentences them to six months of marriage counseling with therapist Dr. Twitchell (where do they come up with these names?!), played by Queen Latifah.

Jack and Joy realize that in order to get their hands on the money, they’ll have to cooperate. But they both try to make the other slip up, each hoping to get all the money instead of splitting it between them.

This is the kind of movie I’ll probably watch again when it comes out on DVD. Ashton and Diaz are so adorable and even moreso when they’re heating up the screen together, even if you can see the ending coming a mile away (you know, it’s a romantic comedy, so…).

And I just have to add that it’s oh so wrong that the 35-year-old Diaz should have such a perfect body and a dazzling smile. But you go, girl.

Also fun to see Dennis Farina as Joy’s boss. I’ve been a big fan of his since his Crime Story days.
