What’s Next for Marvel after "Iron Man"?

by Jane Boursaw on May 4th, 2008

With Iron Man ripping up the box office this weekend, people are wondering what’s next for Marvel. Marvel’s financing deal announced in the summer of 2005 guaranteed distribution for 10 films through Paramount. That means Paramount must distribute films Marvel brings to the table.

For Marvel, the pact is simply a two-film deal, with Iron Man the first and one more (Universal’s The Incredible Hulk is exempt) to follow. However, any movies based on Captain America and Nick Fury must go through Paramount should they be made.

Marvel properties, including The Avengers, Thor, and Ant Man (pictured) could conceivably end up with other distributors. With Iron Man tracking well, Marvel wants to show Wall Street that it can deliver the goods.

More after the jump…

“There’s a lot riding on ‘Iron Man’ for Marvel because they don’t have a lot of movies,” said director Jon Favreau, adding that he’d do another “in a hearbeat.”

Marvel likely won’t be releasing any movies in 2009, as the studio would have to be in pre-production now to make a summer date. The studio’s next project is expected to be announced Monday, with Avengers, Ant Man, and Thor the favorites.

Will it matter that general audiences aren’t as familiar with these characters as others? Not if the filmmakers create a great production and marketing platform. Guess we’ll find out.
