Will there be a third "X-Files" movie?

by Jane Boursaw on December 31st, 2008

My nephew, who knows everything there is to know about "The X-Files," sent me an IESB.com link the other day about the possibility of a third "X-Files" movie. I can’t say I was all gung-ho about the second one, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," but I’d definitely be onboard for a third movie.

Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman seems interested, too. There’s been talk about a third movie that covers the 2012 mythology of "The X-Files" and the alien colonization, but in the IESB.com interview, Rothman says, "It’s really up to Chris [Carter], David [Duchovny], and Gillian [Anderson].

As for the mediocre reception to the second movie, Rothman responds this way: "…that was the film Chris wanted to do. He was determined to do a stand alone film, a film that wasn’t dependent upon the mythology. His interest in making the movie, was in the characters and in their relationship, not the mythology."

Honestly, though, I think moviegoers would be more interested in a third movie that covered the alien colonization and the whole mythology surrounding the year 2012. Just writing those words makes me a little giddy.

What about you? Would you be interested in a third "X-Files" movie? And if so, what would you like to see in it?

If it isn’t based on the mytharc, I’m not going to be happy about it. I went to see the 2nd movie on opening day and was so displeased to learn that we hear nothing about baby William and that it basically was a poorly executed long X-Files episode rather than a movie.

    Loved DD, though :)

I’m left with the impression - after reading Tom Rothman’s remarks - that certain compromises will have to be made in order for another “X-Files” movie to happen. Or maybe that goes without saying. But, regardless, I do hope it happens and, if it does, is a movie that everyone is satisfied with.

Ryan (who’s my nephew the X-Files expert, by the way!) - Have you heard anything more about whether a third movie would follow the 2012 mythology?

Oh, definitely. Creator Chris Carter was saying even before IWTB was released in theaters that a third movie would probably revisit the show’s alien invasion storyline. It’s funny, though: when the show first began I was always looking forward to the ‘mythology’ episodes more than the ‘monster-of-the-week’ episodes but as the series went on (and the mytharc became more and more complex) I found myself appreciating the latter more, hehe.

As a huge fan of the show, i was shcoked by how lackluster, joyless and simply inept this movie was. Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz killed the show post season 7 with inept plotting and weak characterization and left a rich universe completely barren by killing off every single remaing interesting character from The Gunmen, to Krycek and CSM, it was maddening how they destroyed the show. The only way to make the movie the show would truly deserve would be to keep Frank Sponitz away, have Chris Carter as a producer, bring back the series’ finest writers Glen Morgan, James Wong, Darin Morgan, Vince Gilligan and even DD and hire a real movie director. IWTB was yet anohter attempt for Carter to write his own “Beyond the Sea’ and “Clyde bruckman” and the results speak for themselves. I hope we get a nice reminder of how brilliant thie series used to be-the last few seasons coupled with this movie have destroyed much of the brilliance that had come before. Lets hope we get a film deserving of its legacy

A true fan would LOVE a third movie. The second movie was great…just b/c it didn’t include ‘black oil’..doesn’t make it any less of an ‘X-File’.
However, if David and Gillian don’t join Chris Carter..it’s a no go. Their talent MUST stay together.

I have to say I wasn’t overly excited about the second movie, it was a good extra long episode and thats about it. Having said that though I would love to see a 3rd Movie based around the Alien invasion of 2012 from Mayhen Mythology. I think Mulder and Scullys relationship should be made a little clearer……..are they happy together or not kind of thing? If a 3rd movie involving Aliens and Mulder and Scully is made I am pretty sure it will be the perfect recipe. . . . . Bring it on!

I have just watched IWTB & have to say that I am disappointed! It didn’t really go into enough detail regarding the transplants & what they were hoping to achieve.

I really hope there is a 3rd movie & that it is based on the alien conspiracy concept.

I just bought IWTB and was totally bummed out. I was hoping to see more of the mytharc in this movie. It was great to see Mulder & Scully together again but what happened to baby William? Did he just fall off the face of the earth (I realize that’s a plausable reality for an X-file film but really, what happenened to him?). It was a great stand alone episode for the series but a bomb for the theaters. I’m up for a third movie if DD and AG and some aliens show up!

IWTB sucked balls! I was really dissapointed that they didnt stick with the original story line. I think Chris Carter owes it to all the x-files fans out there to make a third movie that picks up where FTF left off. And he needs to do it quick, Duchovny and Anderson arent gettin any younger.

I took IWTB for what it was. I read enough to know that it was a stand alone. I agree, it was more like an extra long episode. I do hope they make another movie that picks up the threads of the alien invasion, William and their relationship. It would be closure and that’s what I feel I need as a huge fan.
